You never. Draft. A kicker.

That's like taking Gostkowski in the 8th for fantasy because "he's the best kicker"

And for your information, Telvin was a 5th round pick. Never draft a kicker. Period.
Quote:Carolina didn't lose due to lack of defense
no they didn't lose because of their defense, they lost because Denver's defense was too much for their offense to handle...carolina has a pretty darn good offense, but not good enough to overcome Denver's defense

Gostkowski was a 4th round pick.
Kickers win and lose games in this league. I refuse to believe the small minded philosophy not to draft one even if the value is there.

The value isn't there. And will never be there.

Steelers kicker was found off the street. It happens all the time. Use the draft pick on someone who has the potential to actually play a pivotal role on the team. Let someone else waste their draft pick on a kicker while the Jags try to find to next Telvin or Sherman or Robert Mathis.....
Taking a kicker in the fifth is fine.

If you just lost the conference championship and need a better one to get to the big game next year.

Not if you have the needs the jags have.

Like 70% of the time guys picked late in the draft are on the PS, eventually cut or never see the playing field besides special teams. You would rather take a flier on a Chris Smith pick over a kicker like Aguayo who you can project into the league as likely being a stud player for 15 years?

You're exact reasoning is how we ended up with Anger. "Anger is a starter!" Yea but he's a punter when we could have had Wilson or Atkins....

Of course I'd rather take a flyer on Chris Smith. That's how you end up with player like Sherman and Mathis and Telvin. You take flyers on them and see what happens.

Anger was picked in the 3rd round. We all know Gene was an idiot and there was a lot of talent on the board still. Hell, Vinny Curry was still there.

If we're talking 5th round? I have no problem pulling that trigger. And hitting on guys like Sherman/Telvin ain't easy. More often than not it's a miss than a hit.
I think Dave and Gus are pretty set on Colvin being the full time nickel corner, otherwise Boykin would be awesome. Heck, I'd like to get him anyway cause it's highly unlikely that Colvin will be better than him.

And if you hit on them like Seattle did and like we did with Telvin? It's the picks like those that take you to the ship.

I know when Anger was picked but the point remains. You're passing up players for a position that has minimal value to your teams success. Kickers can be found in many places.

Picking a kicker is useless. What if he's not as good as projected? Then you wasted the pick. There's a big reason why kickers are rarely drafted.

We need many more pieces than a kicker and picking one this year is a waste. We need depth and potential starters.

Based on what exactly? Boykin could barely get on the field last season in a secondary that could arguably be the worst in the league.

And kickers don't take you to the ship? How many Super Bowls and games are decided on your kicker? Can you sit here and say the Jags record wouldn't have been better with a superior kicker? You can use the same logic both ways. You pick a guy to develop, he doesn't work out and you still waste the pick. At least with kickers their job is relatively simple to evaluate more effectively and translate their position into the NFL.

The new kicking rule in the NFL is the beginning of a new era. Kickers will become more valuable because of it.

Plenty are decided by the kicker. Kickers play an important role. But you don't need to draft one to find one.

Especially with a team like the Jags who have a lot of holes. We shouldn't draft a kicker.

The Jags record would have been better with a better defense. Does the kicker play a role? Yea. 5th rounders this past year? Rashadd Greene, Karlos Williams, Stefon Diggs, Ajayi.....

Gimme all those guys over a kicker like Aguayo any day of the week.

I would love for another team to Draft Aguayo.... Leave the real positions for the Jags.

Because they were stupid?

He played a lot in the final third of the season and had an elite 74.3 QBR against, while yet again grading out as a top 10 corner according to PFF. He's one of the premier nickel corners in the league no one disputes that.

For every Greene, Williams, Diggs there are even more guys who never see the field. If the value is there and Aguayo is on the board I wouldn't be shocked to see him become a Jag.

I'd be very shocked and super disappointed.

QBR Smile
Uhh yeah don't draft a kicker lol. That is the most luxury of draft choices one can make.
I would like something like this to happen...

FA:

Tamba Hali/JPP - LEO - Either guy would be a 1-2 year deal which allows Dante to ease back and alleviate pressure for Dante

Reggie Nelson/Eric Weddle - FS - Vet to shore up the FS spot. Rookie will be groomed behind him

Trumaine Johnson - CB - Perfect fit for the Bradley scheme

Zach Brown - OTTO - All the physical tools (6'1" 253 and runs a 4.44) and seems to have fallen out of favor with the Titans

Would also resign Henne, Marcedes, Wiz, Harbor, and Ryan Davis.

Draft:

1) Joey Bosa - DE - Stud DE to pair with Fowler going forward

TRADE - Our 2nd and 3rd to move up to get...

1) Jaylon Smith - MLB - Would start on PUP and ease him into the lineup. MLB of the future.

4) Sebastian Tretola - G - Mauker who could allow Cann to slide to C

5) Kevin Byard - FS - Centerfielder to groom behind the FA FS

6) Glenn Gronkowski - HB - H-Back to add versatility to the offense

6) Aaron Green - RB - Shifty guy to add another dimension to the offense

7) Alex McCalister - LEO - Long, explosive DE that would fit well as a LEO
