Quote:D6 did you get any good stuff for your birthday? Maybe something Lions-related?

I received a great Lions related birthday gift that's even better than a tangible gift.   Former Lions G Richard Stanfel, who was the 1953 NFL MVP,  finally was voted into the Pro Football HOF.    This was his 3rd time Stanfel was a Senior Committee Finalist.  Sadly,  he passed away this past June.  I'll never understand why the overall HOF Committee sometimes goes against the recommendations of the Senior Committee.   At least they got it right on this February 6!

I met Richard Stanfel back in 2002 at a function that was related to the Lions 50th Anniversary of the 1952 Championship team.  The Lions repeated as NFL Champions in 1953,    A class act.   He was not only a terrific player but he was the same as an Assistant Coach in the NFL for 30 seasons.   Including for over a decade with the Bears as Offensive Line Coach,  including their 1985 Super Bowl winning team.
Happy belated Birthday D6!

Happy belated, David!

That was a once-in-a-lifetime present. What a great coincidence to have that happen on your birthday. It is sad he died before the HOF selection committee voted him in, but at least they did it.

Did a lot of people call him Richard? His name on the list is a censored word here and Scarecrow got mad at me for spacing out the letters.

I did not get mad at you.

I simply said you can't say dick on here and thought you might want to change it instead of avoid the filter.  I'm sure the mods didn't care and I was only trying to help you.
Happy Birthday Late David.

One of the good guys.

At least publicly,  Richard was rarely used to describe him.   But Richard was his actual first name.   Several days ago,  I mentioned Coach MacPherson in another thread.  Because of the filter,  which I totally forgot about when posting in the other thread,   I decided to use Richard Stanfel's actual name here.

Because the Super Bowl has been played on or around my birthday since around the turn of the century,   there's a 1 in 7 chance that the HOF voting will occur on my birthday in the present.   This time around,  I'm thrilled with the results!

One additional thought as it relates to the Jaguars.  Though Richard Stanfel and Tony Boselli played in different eras,  Stanfel being elected to the HOF can only help Boselli's chances in eventually getting in.   They had similar sized careers and both were differential players at their respective Offensive Line positions.
