I can see the Texans drafting him because of O'Brien. Second round seems a little high but so much can change next month.

Houston is QB hungry. They may jump the gun so they can assure themselves of getting him. I think the 2nd round is high for him, I even think the 3rd is too.

I'm leaning towards drafting a QB in the 4th round and letting Henne walk.  It's Blake's 3rd year.  He doesn't need a "mentor".  Henne may be an OK backup, but so would a developmental rookie.  If he had to play, so be it.  We've seen numerous examples of quarterbacks coming in and doing fine in their rookie year (usually until teams figure out a game plan against them).   It's been a long time since we drafted a backup QB.  Wasn't the last one Garrard?  He turned out fine.

Hack has the pocket presence comparable to Blaine Gabbert.

We have way too many needs to be drafting a QB early in the 4th round.  Assuming Bortles is our franchise QB for the next 15 years, that would be a wasted pick.  I'd rather just sign a $2m veteran / game manager to play for a few games in the event Bortles gets injured.

But what need can you really expect to fill with a 4th round pick?  You can't expect to find a pass rusher, nor a free safety.  Maybe a decent linebacker or running back.  But you can't expect to have a playoff team if you're relying on a 4th round rookie to play.  Many of the needs should be filled by free agency already.  I think they have more flexibility especially in the mid rounds.  If there is a quality quarterback that falls in the 4th or 5th range, I think they should take him.  It's only one pick.  

 

As far as Henne goes, his salary is irrelevant.  My guess is they want to sign him, but we don't know if Henne even wants to resign.  My problem with the $2m reject veteren is that he's unlikely to be any good.  There's at  least a possibility the rookie could end up being good.

So, why stay with the "OK backup" when you can burn draft capital on a backup that may be OK?

Already explained above.  You're not staying with anybody.  Chad Henne is a free agent.  They have no backup QB.  Why keep going for table scraps year after year as a backup QB.  At least TRY to draft an develop. Chad Henne was signed to be a stop gap.  Mission complete.  We can move on.

Chad Henne was a stop gap starting QB. We did move on. Seems to me that he is the perfect backup QB and it makes no sense to move on for the sake of moving on. While burning 1/8 of our draft picks.
