If you can't go home, try and bring a little bit of home to you.

<p style="margin-left:40px;">"...<span>Florida-based upscale supermarket chain Publix is coming to the Richmond region.
The Lakeland, Fla.-based Publix Super Markets Inc. said this morning that it has signed a lease for a 49,000-square-foot store</span>..."

That should be good news for you. What grocery stores do you have up there? I'm assuming a Krogers and Aldi?

Kroger, yes. And Aldi just moved in but has a very small presence similar to Whole Foods. Wegeman's has announced plans to move here as well.

What's kind of odd is that when I first moved here, the big chain in town was Ukrop's. A Grocery company very very similar to Publix in the early days. Didn't sell alcohol, closed on Sundays, big commitment to Customer Service, excellent Deli and Bakery services, all locally owned and operated. A few year's ago, the Ukrop's family sold their name to a chain called "Martin's" (I think they are affiliated with Food Lion) and they moved in. Thing is, Martin's seems to be dying out already despite buying some of the best locations you could ask for. I think Publix is going to really take off here, if they bring their traditional quality with them.

A bit too far for me to go, but that's pretty cool.  I know my cousin has a Publix near her in SC, and I think she shops there.

Publix outside of Florida isn't the same.  Big drop off in service and store conditions.

I like Publix, but I really only go for the bakery/deli and their produce.

Publix fried chicken is the best !!

I love Publix and all, but they got a long way to go in order to claim that title 'round here.
I think we may need a "best fried chikken EVARRR" thread Smile

Oh, and Deacon, something nice I discovered at Publix since moving south.

They stock a great little jar of prepared horseradish that's great in bloody Mary's.

White jar with red letters in the dairy case next to the kraut. Good in sauces & hot dog mustard too.

Just get it and thank me later.

I know a lot of people think this. I don't even think they are the best grocery store with fried chicken let alone quite a few of the fast food and mom and pop joints.
But Publix is by far my favorite grocery store. You'll pay a bit more but when it comes to selection, customer service, cleanliness, and freshness it is second to none.

I never thought of Publix as upscale.  Better than Winn Dixie, Rowes and Food Dog (back in the day) but not really upscale.

Nope, it really doesn't fit the "upscale" definition. Whole Foods here in Florida, Bristol Farms in California, Cook's Warehouse in the Atl, etc. are upscale. Publix is definitely several notches above your typical grocery store though.

Yup, know that stuff well. Used to have to stock it back in the day. Kinda hard to find it around these parts.

Which grocery store has better fried chicken?  If you say Winn Dixie that only goes to show how little credibility you have on this message board.  Their fried chicken is absolute garbage.

If we're comparing grocery store fried chicken then Publix ranks right up there. If we're comparing Publix chicken to some local restaurants and soul food spots then they have some competition.
Meh...  Publix, Winn Dixie, etc. are all the same... except when it comes to price and value.  It's a grocery store.  If I want good fried chicken, I buy some chicken and fry it myself.  For me, as long as the store is clean and well stocked, then I'll shop there.  It's been my experience that Publix is usually a bit higher in cost on their groceries than say Winn Dixie.

I buy meat from a butcher and produce from a vegetable market (other than what I grow myself).

In my opinion, if you're buying meals from the "deli" you're wasting your money.  No matter the store, all of their "deli" and other prepared food is about the same as getting food at a hospital cafeteria.

Aaaaaand there's no party without a party pooper
