Quote:I'm all for bringing Wiz back so long as he promises to stop with the errant snaps. Definitely a position we could upgrade

That is exactly why I wanted Dave Caldwell to cut Wiz - horrible snaps. Both times he single-handedly gave the defense a touchdown and at Tennessee, that cost us the game. I need to see those snaps were very rare anomalies.
Wiz played 100% of our 1058 offensive snaps. He had what, half a dozen bad snaps or so...and I know for sure one of the shotgun fumbles was Blake's fault. So, if your wanting to replace Wiz is based on a ~1/200 mistake then I don't know what to tell ya. Bad snaps should basically be a non issue in this debate.

By my count, one errant snap. One other bad snap, that was not ideal but Blake shoulda had it.

Like I said before, run blocking is also a problem. We need a better run blocker in the middle.
I hate to agree with her, but i thought Wiz was pretty below average as a run blocker as well. Some of that might be Zane Boodles tho, and Wiz was pretty decent in pass protection. Obviously I think it's important to put a much higher priority on protecting Blake Bortles than it is to open lanes for TJ Yeldon, but it would definitely be nice to get another one of those rookie interior linemen in the 3rd round to come in and play at a really high level.

Certainly Zane Beadles is to blame as well for run blocking issues, but the players have to work together to open a running lane. Using the third round pick on an interior lineman would be pretty smart.
Mack looked downright awful this year. He got handled in many games. Olsen's protege was the OC for the Browns and tried to go away from ZBS. Mack got tossed into the backfield repeatedly and the interior running game took a huge dump.
I like the idea of sliding Cann over to center and then signing a guy like Osemele to take over for Beadles. O-Line fixed.

Apology accepted.
Quote:Wiz wasn't terrible? C'mon, man. You have to know he is not good enough at blocking either. We need someone who will create big holes for T.J. Yeldon on up-the-middle runs, not just a better snapper. With A.J. Cann and Brandon Linder - both upgrades at guard - we need to focus on the center position to improve run blocking.

You can't blame Wiz completely for the lack of run blocking this year. The entire left side, that's including Joeckel and Beadles didn't seem up to snuff this year in the run blocking department. I don't know what it is with those guys. It's like they need to start wearing pants with pockets in them and add some weights into them to help them hold up better. They get pushed around and bowled back way too easy at the initial point of contact. I lost count on how many times I'd see Luke or Zane just get completely uplifted to where they lost one foot off the turf at the minimum. Yeldon played a part as well. Let's not act like he was hitting the holes consistently. He had a few games where he had some really bad habits of shifting left to right and not trusting what he saw on the initial hand-off. This isn't on plays where he had the wolves on his back after two steps either. This is where he had time to think and go and wasted time in the backfiled shuffling left to right. That's the only thing I liked about Denard when he played this year, he didn't shift, he just went for the hole and hoped to break it loose. Yeldon will learn. This isn't college or Alabama anymore. You have to follow your initial assignments and then trust your eyes once you at least make it past the LOS. And we do need a better snapper. Wiz gave up 14 or 21 points in games that could have been the difference between 7 - 9 or 5 - 11 this year. That's not excusable at all.

I think what they should do, is try to secure Mack if possible. Place him in the Center position. Drop Beadles, kick Cann over to his spot at LG and then hopefully Linder is ready to go at RG for 2016. Parnell was decent at RT. Joeckel still leaves a lot to be desired at LT. He had a decent stretch but got absolutley manhandled in some match-ups. And he's the reason why Bortles ended up banging up his thumb in the season finale in Houston. And I remember him also getting blown off his feet several times and falling right into Bortles legs and knees more than once this year. And if that happens. We're done. Just like most teams in the NFL.

Wiz was marginal, at best.  I doubt he is re-signed by the Jags, as he was a weak spot in the line.  There is a reason Caldwell mentioned the possibility of moving Cann over to center and never mentioned the desire to get Wiz re-signed.

Whoever can snap the ball to bortles and not get crushed in one on ones.

Quote:Depends on what happens with Mack in a few months in Cleveland. Caldwell already pursued him once. If no strings or stipulations are in his way this time he could make a move for him yet again. Wiz wasn't terrible. It was just the bad snaps in consecutive weeks that made us hate him so much. Bowanko could push him a bit if he's healthy. But again, if Mack is available. Caldwell should make that his biggest offensive priority in free agency at the minimum.
I agree with this.

While Wiz was not the dominant run blocker we'd prefer, I don't think he was Widell, either.  Mack isn't too old to be of use, and while most agree last year was a down year for him, there is enough who say that his play improved in the second half of the season to make me think he would be of help to us, a year removed from his broken leg.
Quote:Looks like there's a lot of good center talent in the draft. I see 4 or 5 potential starters.

Any particularly strong in the run game?

Jack Allen from Michigan State is pretty good in the run game and pretty agile, reminds me of the Eagles center,Kelse?
I wonder why Bowanko never seems to be in the conversation.  In the preseason, he was touted as the 6th lineman and worth developing, and then he never sniffed the field this season.  Is he a lost cause?
