Quote:Dave's best case scenario would be to sign enough FA's so that we have no pressing needs come draft time and he can draft BAP. IF Ramsey is your BAP, then take him.

Even if the Jags sign a free safety (and I certainly hope they do) I wouldn't take Ramsey off the table
Currently, pre combine, still think the pick should be Bosa, Ramsey or Jack
If I am Dave Caldwell and I have signed one or two pass rushers and Eric Berry, I feel like I am playing with house money and pull a Gene Smith and draft a long snapper.
Okay Seriously, I still draft a DB, the Jags secondary needs more help than Berry can provide. I would take either a CB or LT with the #5 pick.
Id rathe take Jack or Hargreaves in the first and take Cash in the 2nd to fix our SS position and play Berry at FS
So assuming we got a pass rusher (say Olivier) and somehow landed Berry in FA..
Assuming Bosa is gone but Ramsey is still there...
At this point, Ramsey would *still* be the top player on my board. I'd still take him and slide Berry to SS. In a way, landing Berry would actually allow us to use Ramsey to his full potential. Why? Because if we didn't have Berry, I would hesitate to use Ramsey as a blitzer (and thus leave Cyprien as the cover safety). But with Berry on the back end? I would be more than willing to really use Ramsey all over the field.
Quote:Suppose free agency not only nets you the pass rusher or two you crave, but also a S (Berry, who you believe can play free).
Come draft day, the Jaguars are on the clock at pick 5, and the FSU DB Jalen Ramsey is on the board.
Having signed the FS the defense needs in Berry, do you double up on DBs with Ramsey?
Why or why not?
At this point I'm not sure.
On the one hand, I think Ramsey is a heckuva prospect, and I think he could actually play CB. If you believe certain positions are a premium, taking him as a CB should certainly be justified. His selection would give us all kinds of depth and flexibility in the secondary. If we put him in at CB, we'd have at least one good press corner. If you put him in at FS, move Berry to SS, then we have all of the talent and range we could possibly need at those two positions. We could finally play the back end of the defense properly.
On the other, I think with the addition of Berry, the secondary would be "good enough" if not perfect. But there are other areas of need on the team. The DL could use more talent inside and outside. LB could use help, and the last game of the season shows that Luke Joeckel is far from a sure thing at LT.
Assuming we got the pass rushers in free agency, I might still take Ramsey at 5.
How long are the FA signed for? One year? two years? I'd take him simply because FA are not the future, they are a patch...If the guy you think can be your positional player for years to come, grab him even if you have addressed that position in FA...If he's just going to be a serviceable player, average, or added for depth try and trade the pick, or pick another player that will be an impact player, or an area of need
I'd do whatever the heck I wanted, because apparently I have the golden touch.
Seriously, though... I'd still draft Ramsey. I'm not a GM, and I'm not a Scout, but he looks every bit as good as the hype.
Ramsey/Berry on the back end? Sheeeez....
I'd do what I'd have done even if we didn't sign Berry: draft Noah Spence.
I think I'd take the defensive player that's still there that's highest on my board. If it's Ramsey, so be it.
It's still too far away for me to really have a good feel on who that may end up being.

I still pick Jalen Ramsey, and I play him at FS and Berry at SS
Not only that, but unless there's a can't-miss MLB prospect I'm
still taking the best cornerback available in round 2 especially if it's Alexander.
You can never have enough good DBs, and Jacksonville would legitimately be set to defend against the pass.

Corners can't cover forever. We need pass rushers and as many as possible at this point.

I agree, but we're getting a lot of help in that department when Fowler comes in, and we're obviously going to go hard in free agency for pass rushers.
I just can't go into another season knowing my secondary isn't built.
The key to the draft is can we get a top tier FS. If we can put Weddle or Berry in teal then Dave has so much more freedom in the draft and can get away from a "need picks". This would certainly make a trade down option much more attractive and be a sign the roster is finally turning the corner talent wise. We have lots of cap room..lets spend, but spend wisely!!!

Honestly, our secondary will be fine if we can get any sort of pass rush. House even said it himself. QBs had days to stand back there and throw.
I agree we can still use secondary help but the priority this season is pass rush. No doubt about it. Vernon, Fowler, JPP maybe.... Then sign some FS and then draft Bosa Jack or Ramsey.
This defense will take a big step due to the players regardless of how Wash is as a coach.

That is a good question. I didn't consider that factor.
Given Berry's age, health (assuming he's beaten that horrible cancer), and performance, let's assume a 4 year deal for him, a 3 year deal for Mario Williams, and a 4 year deal for Vernon.
