He's been a disappointment.

I much prefer someone reliable to pin someone, and has a sense of the moments.

There was one year Podlesh only allowed like 120 return yards all year.  I'd much prefer knowing we aren't going to have a game changing return against us.

I think I'd move on.

He honesty puns too far sometimes which gives the opposition a real chance to return. Its frustrating to watch because of all the room the returner has when he catches it.
He is nothing special.  He struggles to put it inside the 20

Yeah but the guy that signed Turk drafted Anger and they're both terrible.
Quote:No, and "embarrassment" from him being a third round pick is terrible, horrible motivation for not resigning him.
Not so sure I would agree with that.

A small part of gutting the team several years ago was to rid the team of vestiges of the teams past losing image. It is unarguable that Brian Anger is a succinct reminder of the buffoonery inflicted on this franchise by former GM Gene Smith. The issue isn't that Anger is a serviceable punter, he obviously is, but he certainly wasn't worth a third round pick...no punter is, and that's the optic that renewing his contract here should be viewed through. If his contract were not renewed, he would almost certainly end of elsewhere as someone else's punter... and that's okay! Serviceable punters are relatively easy to find, so it isn't like not renewing Anger's contract would be a blow to the team. On the other hand, his staying here could always be a reminder of this teams 'laughing stock legacy'; and that is something this team needs to move on from.

Now having said all this, it would also be true that it's best to 'let old wounds heal and not reopen them'. What I mean by this is that the very act of not renewing Angers contract would in itself draw attention to the circumstances of his being here and would defeat the very reason for not keeping him!

Perhaps you are right and it would be best to not muddy up the waters... Anger isn't anything to write home to mom about, but he does his job without much drama which is about as much as you can hope for from most punters... third round pick or not.

In view of my own seemingly contradictory post, I should point out that I'm 60 years old and I reserve the right to make nonsensical comments from time to time.

Permission granted.

(as long as I can use the same disclaimer in a few years)

:teehee:
LOL....love the disclaimer...

But seriously we have much bigger problems to worry about.

Besides, maybe ST coach will get it in gear and work on him to improve or sooner or later staff will get around to replacing him.

If we do, then we do.

I wouldn't have a problem moving on from another Smiff pick...

especially an average punter that never seems to pin anyone deep.

Reminds me of the Bama punter... booms it every time

he says "cuz I don't like to run"

Quote:We have already reached the point in the off season where we are focusing on the punter? Gonna be a long one.

Of all the priorities this team has this year, punter would be at the bottom of the list.

The punter was obviously a big enough deal for your hero Gene Smith to burn a 3rd round pick on him.

"Gene is right, we got a starter in the 3rd round. What a steal. Believe in the process. In Gene we trust."

Touché'
Bring in competition, sure.  Blindly cut him and hope the next guy is better, no thanks.

He is a free agent, so the discussion is whether to resign him or not.

Ah, my bad...Ignore my comment then.

A new contract should be viewed through the optic of what his worth is to the team now. Not something that happened 4 years and on which the man himself had no influence. The same thing happened with Alualu last year, was he worth a first round pick in hindsight? No. But he had a worth to the team and he was offered a contract fitting that worth.

And need I remind you the last time we had a drafted punter and let him go in FA? We needed up with Matt Turk, think about that for a second; Matt Turk.
Is Anger bad at pinning it inside the 20 or is our coverage just terrible?

I honestly don't know but I don't think it's as easy as laying it all at Anger's feet.

Can you really Pun too far? I always thought puns were the highest form of humor.

They are the highest form of humor, but beware, if you pun too far, you may get booted.

Of course, too big a pun in Dallas could break a light in the scoreboard and that would just be funny.

Yup, don't see it happening.

Both. Anger outkicks his gunners by a mile, but his gunners (McCray and Marshall) are clearly not the fastest guys in the NFL, and one might wonder why they're in that position.
