Reported by ESPN and NFL. Always nice to see an ex Jag do well.
RIP Buccaneers. The man has a great offensive mind, but he's an awful head coach. His final year at Arizona State was undercut from the start as he named Sam Keller the starting QB during camp, then was called into a players-only meeting that night and told by several key offensive starters that they would not play unless Rudy Carpenter was the QB. He was a figurehead from there on out, and wasn't exactly a stellar head coach before then anyway.

He did get back to back 10 win seasons with Boise. Plus what has it been, 10 years since ASU?

There is a chance he has improved as a coach.

Fun fact edit** At least as of two years ago, he still has a home here in Jacksonville too.
"Peter principle"

Widely misused, but perfect in this case.

What Dirk Koetter did at ASU is irrelevant. This is the NFL, where he has only been an assistant coach.
I'm stoked tbh, if he brings in Mike Smith or Schwartz, my offseason would be made.

So what Chip Kelly, Nick Saban and Steve Spurrier did in college weren't considered when they got NFL head jobs?

Why do you mention them? They got HC jobs in the NFL because of their success at the college level. Dirk Koetter got a HC job in the NFL because of what he did as an OC in the NFL.

Mike Smith it is, I'm actually excited in an offseason

Why did you have to ask?

They were high acheiving college head coaches who flopped at the same role in the NFL.  Difference is, Koetter wasn't necessarily "fantastic" in college.  Good, but nothing as good as the others mentioned.

And Koetter really hasn't accomplished much as an OC in the NFL.  Jacksonville's offense got nothing but worse after his first season here.  Ditto Atlanta, where he had all the weapons he ever needed.  And, there was nothing special going on in Tampa that wasn't a result of Winston.  Honestly, I doubt there's much more to the hire other than a connection he has with Winston.

Hope he doesn't do to Winston what he apparently has done to Ryan.

Good for Dirk

I completely disagree with the idea that Koetter was a bad offensive coordinator. He played to the strengths of his team on every team he was on. The fact that he was handed Gabbert and told to make ice cream out of dirt his last year wasn't fair to him. And our rush game was 3rd in the league overall during his tenure. All of Garrards best years came with Koetter, ditto for MJD, also for Lewis.

The Falcons were 4th overall in passing offense during his time there as well. He also has done well with a rookie Winston last year and suddenly Doug Martin becomes second in the league in rushing yards after looking like a one year wonder for the last 2 years (not to mention his backup Sims looking good too)? Tampa Bay has a top 5 rushing unit. How is this for a factoid: during his 9 seasons as offensive coordinator, he has never had a season where he didn't have either A. a QB or B. a RB in the top ten for yards. And hes had over half his seasons where they were in the top 5.

The guy knows offense and adapts to what he has. Seems like he made a strong case for being a head coach with the way he has adapted to his teams strengths. Now it may be the peter principle, but this guy seems to do what everyone says you need to in order to be successful (i.e. adapt to the personal you have), and I fully expect him to take that to the team as a whole. And hes loved by players. Seems like a smart hire to me.
Todd Monken will be working under Dirk Koetter again.   This time as Bucs Offensive Coordinator and QB Coach.
