Even though the chances are slim. If hits FA officially. Based on Caldwell's presser statement I would throw the house to FS Eric Berry. His level of play is pretty much guaranteed. And gives us a Great FS for many years to come.
Where as. Never know what ya get in the draft. It is always a gamble. And would give Gus no excuse if loses his job in
2016.
Where does Sample fit?
Is he still going to be "groomed" at FS, or is he strictly competition/depth with Cyprien at SS?
I honestly think Dave should look into acquiring Bobby Boucher. The guy is a ball hawk, hard hitter, and can play multiple positions.

In his press conference, Dave said they drafted Sample even though he is similar to Cyprien and they were planning to adjust the scheme to accommodate. Since Sample didn't play much and we are now in another offseason, I could see Sample competing with Cyprien instead of FS (assuming Dave gets the FS he wants).
Hes not a ss just schemed up like that stop. He can be lined up anywhere on the field and is a ball hawk youtube his TN highlights and cbs labels him a FS as well.

But, but his momma won't let him plays foosball!

College (yuck lower level of competition) highlights (yuck small hand picked sample size) from (yuck duration) 6 or more years ago. Pretty sure that means next to nothing.
Berry for the most part has been used in the box in the NFL, and while I do think he probably could play an ok makeshift FS I don't think it would be the impact single high centerfield FS that Dave obviously covets.
I'm not writing off Berry as a possibility, but a scheme fit that we haven't seen before plus the fact that I'm sure the Chiefs will try pretty hard to keep him makes me think it's a very long shot to happen.
Berry-SS, Cyprien-backup. Ramsey FS, Sample-backup. Draft a corner in the 3rd or 4th round.
From PFF's top 10 defensive free agents...

4. Eric Berry, S, Chiefs (
93.6)

Our highest-graded safety on the year, it’s remarkable that Berry has come back from illness, and not just returned to his previous level of play, but surpassed it. One of a new breed of safeties, Berry is a true defensive weapon, one whom you can line up anywhere and ask anything of him. He’s a fantastic cover man who can match tight ends, and a force in the run game who has an instinct for ball carriers. It’s been tremendous to have him back in the league, and he’s earned his upcoming big pay day.

Of course the team would need to get a strong understanding of his cancer prognosis to know that he's not going to keel over at some point, but he's been a beast at FS for the Chiefs this past year.
Does it even matter if Berry is a FS or a SS? The Jaguars can use new starters at both spots.

I put Berry at FS in Madden and he went from 94 to 99 overall.
seriously

man, anytime a guy isn't one of your picks you have a weird agenda to pick at them.
if you recall before berry's draft, he was regarded as one of the best safety prospects and some had said maybe the closest to Sean Taylor we had seen.
he's not that freaky, but he is pretty crazy athletic and a total difference maker in the secondary. Just because kc doesn't use him like we would, doesn't mean he can't. He would instantly be the best guy in our secondary. On top of that he's a smart player with a lot of experience and would improve the players around him.
not to be too snide, but I'd bet he has a pretty mean spider chart too.
Don't the chiefs have loads of cap space? Why wouldn't they want to keep their own?

Berry is a special guy on and off the field. Teams don't typically let them walk. I don't expect him to leave.

Exactly. I don't either. Especially given the fact that they can afford to pay him whatever he wishes.
Berry ain't going no where, just stop.

I never quite, 100%, bought into the notion that Sample was a long-term FS prospect for the Jags. He's basically a less-bulky, slightly faster Cyprien. The idea floated by whoever in the coaching staff/FO last year that they'd use basically two strong safeties seemed insane at the time, and it still does.
Ultimately, imo, the team hasn't given up on Cyprien at all, but they will go after a new free safety that actually fits what they want to do and, probably, keep Sample around as depth behind/competition for Cyprien, with Evans around as all-purpose depth that can cover both safety positions if need be.

Last I heard, he was in complete remission with no signs of cancer. Per
Livestrong, fewer 10% of people diagnosed with lymphoma under age 45 will relapse within 10 years. That's a significantly nonzero number, but in the hard, cold business of the NFL, it means that if Berry relapses at all (not terribly likely), it probably wouldn't be until after his playing days are over.
Bottom line, the man has clearly put his health above his playing career. If he showed signs of a relapse, he wouldn't be on the field at all.

...also this. He's loved off the field by Chiefs players, staff and fans, and he's one of the absolute best (and a case for drafting a safety in the top five) on the field. There's no way they
ever let him leave that team.
You got the first name right, but the last name wrong.
Eric Weedle.
