Quote:Jim Caldwell is safe in Detroit.

This was highly unlikely when the Lions were 1-7 and firings occurred in the organization before and after the debacle against the Chiefs in London.   At the time,  it was hard to envision the Lions winning any of the next 6 games.

Finishing with a 6-2 record,  getting Matthew Stafford's career back on track  (  19-2 TD-Interception ratio in the final 8 games,  with one of the Interceptions not being his fault )  through the coaching staff changes,  and getting the team focused through very difficult and uncertain times was a heck of an accomplishment by Coach Caldwell.    The Lions players are strongly in his corner and for the most part played that way in the 2nd half of the season.    The last play of the game against the Packers in Detroit was bad coaching and the team didn't respond well 10 days later in St. Louis.  Otherwise,  despite a less than stellar 2nd half schedule,  the results were very good.

Bob Quinn now has a season to evaluate Jim Caldwell.   If a change is necessary for 2017,  Josh McDaniels probably will enter as the favorite to get the job providing Tennessee doesn't hire him in 2016.    If Teryl Austin doesn't get the Tennessee job,   I think he will be back as Defensive Coordinator which would be great news on this end.
One thing nobody mentioned during Teryl Austin's interview tour was the possibility that if Jim Caldwell gets fired, the Lions could promote him. The Lions would not have been able to interview Josh McDaniels anyway because he is working in the playoffs. I definitely would have put Austin on my favorites list if the players did not like Caldwell after the OC change. It could have been like the Giants situation with Ben McAdoo.

Joe Philbin is the new Colts OL coach.

Mike Smith is now the DC at Tampa Bay.

How can the Titans be this stupid? They are nearly set to take the interim tag off Mike Mularkey.

Hue Jackson interviewed Pep Hamilton, but not for the OC job. He wants to call his own plays.

Mularkey going to be the HC in Tennessee. Thank you, Titans. Thank you.
Well that's the Titans out of our way,the Colts are still on course for an implosion so that just leaves the Texans to takeout and the division is OURS!

The Texans still don't have a QB. If we had any semblance of a defense we could handle them. I don't see any QB this year that could be their target either, especially where they will be picking

This is a very weak QB class so I dont see the QB spot being fixed for them next year. As tough as our schedule looks next year our division is still basically a free for all.

A trade for RGIII maybe??

Keep in mind the Colts did make some changes at the assistant coach level. And they are keeping Rob Chudzinski as the OC. They will not implode with a healthy Andrew Luck.

Grigson is still there and he seems to be an awful drafter.

Andrew Luck is still there and he is a good QB.

Valid point but they are very beatable even with him in my opinion.

Yes they are - by teams better than the Jaguars.

Getting back on topic, does anybody think it makes sense that the Titans decided to retain Mike Mularkey?
Mike Mularkey is officially Tennessee's head coach. The Titans removed the interim tag from his job title.

Went about ten pages thru Mularkey thread on Titans board without anyone being happy about the decision

The Teryl Austin scenario you mentioned is one that I discussed for quite a while.  If Jim Caldwell would have been let go,  Austin would have been my top choice for the Lions HC position.   Austin is very popular amongst the Lions Defensive players and has proven to be a highly skilled Defensive Coordinator.

Having said all of this,  it was highly unlikely that Teryl Austin was going to become the Lions HC this winter.  Ernie Accorsi was the Lions Consultant for the G.M. search and has been kept on as a consultant.    Accorsi talked about the importance of pairing a first time NFL G.M.  with an experienced NFL HC.   I don't think Bob Quinn would have been hired as Lions G.M. if he was looking to hire an NFL HC w/o experience in that role.

I would not be happy either if I was a Titans fan,

Blake Bortles is here and he is a good QB.  Both teams are proof you need to draft solid to good year in and year out.  The Colts have been schizo with their front office decisions and the pun intended, lucked into their QB.
