Quote:That's my issue. People rant over and over about the same tired theme, year over year for nearly a decade now, for what? Ten years of whining about the same things on the same message board has gotten you what exactly?
If there is something else jaguar related that you think is important to talk about, feel free to make a thread about it.
As for this current thread, I'd like to point out that it was derailed by a poster complaining about other posters....
On topic
Caldwell has earned his contract as gm. He's had some misses on free agency, but he's also gotten side talent in here as well.
House isn't a shut down corner, but he's a solid starter. Marks was a great acquisition.
JT80 gets a pass from me. I say the jury is out on him because of the pre season injury. But I expect him to be all pro next year.
Beadles and the white rhino are clearly black eyes, but Caldwell's overall talent acquisition allows me to cut a little slack for some of his misses.
At least we picked up cann and yeldon to make up for beadle and the white rhino.
Quote:You missed my sarcasm in regards to Skuta. My opinion is that he's just a guy, nothing special.
As for Odrick and his 5 Technique position which is a fancy way of saying he plays in the 5 Gap (which 7-8 year old football players and up know) he did have some decent plays as I originally mentioned. But all in all, he's a bottom of the league starter IMO.
The Jags did finish 18th in rushing defense. Also, keep in mind there was a decent amount of praise for Miller and not Odrick so how much can we really contribute to Odrick? Let's not forget Telvin Smith's tackles behind the LOS either.

Except he's not a bottom of the league starter. He helped propel this run defense to one of the best in the league at one point this season. Last year we had Sen and Red Bryant who was a key cog for Seattle and we were bottom 1/3 in run D I believe. We got to the top 5, even with a pathetic pass rush and safety tandem. That is saying a hell of a lot. Odrick's position is all about stopping the run, it literally has barely any expectations for pass rush. Hell, listen to Gus after we got Odrick or when he talked about Big Red last year. They said it's not a flashy position and any sacks from the position is basically gravy, and he lead the team with 5.5 with no one else pressuring the QB for the most part besides a CB that would come in on a blitz once in a while.
If you seriously think Odrick is bottom of the barrell you're just flat out wrong. It's passed opinions at this point, that's just wrong. Odrick was well above average this year. He was well above average for Miami as well, there's a reason we paid him 45M or whatever it was. He was an impact player in Miami, and he continued it this year. Bet we wouldn't be complaining about Odrick if the rest of the defense played better, but when you don't get any pass rush you're pretty one dimensional.

I don't disagree with all your saying but to use "we were a top run defense at one point this season" is like judging our offense based on a really good game they had. I'm only saying that you have to look at an entire season to pass judgment. It's possible I'm being too hard on Odrick but I saw way too many plays where he just stood there. Maybe he's like a home run hitter in baseball. He's either going to strike out and do nothing or hit a home run and make a big play.

Well, it takes much more than just two players to have a good run defense. Our run defense was top 5 when Sen was also in there. Unfortunately, he got hurt and we put Alualu in there who is just good depth at best, and had Clem at LEO who isn't good against the run either. On top of that, we were missing Skuta a lot at the end of the year and Telvin missed the last two games.
Odrick isn't elite, but he is above average and that's a position I feel strong about moving forward. Once Sen comes back, all i'm worried about is LEO x2 (Fowler is one of them though), competition for Skuta and Poz (Skuta is solid enough but there are going to be some nice options like Irvin as well as guys like Myles Jack, Lee, etc. via the draft, and Poz isn't getting any younger), safety help, and a #1 corner. Lot to ask, but with 70M in cap with this FA class, as well as a top 5 pick in rd one and a top 40 pick in rd 2, we should be able to fill most of these holes with guys that will hopefully fit well.
Odrick started out reaaaally slow, but started to pick things up later in the year. I was for sure considering him a bust early on, but he was "OK". Not elite, not great. I'd say average to above average.
Our run defense and its improvement, IMO, has more to do with Roy's elevated play this season than with Odrick, though it certainly didn't hurt.
