Full Version: Impossible to predict what will happen after pick 1

The only thing that's pretty assured at the top of this draft at this point is that Myles Garrett will be drafted first overall. However, past that, it's a mystery. With the moves us, the Niners, and Bears have all made, and with Jonathan Allen dropping because of his shoulders, no one can really say what will happen. The Niners don't appear to want to take a QB in this draft, and that will especially be true if they get Cousins. Meanwhile, the Bears just paid Glennon 16 per year, so unless they're doing that to create smoke and provide them an option for Trubisky to sit behind for a few years, they won't be taking a QB either. However, that makes it really confusing as to who these guys will take. If the number 2 pick is involved in the Cousins trade, then it's fairly likely that the Redskins will draft a QB...probably. But if the Niners stick at 2, it's a mystery. History says DBs aren't going that high. Fournette could go there, but they have Carlos Hyde, and a RB hasn't been drafted second overall in a long time. Meanwhile, it doesn't seem like teams view Thomas as a second overall player. All this same logic can be applied to the Bears, who have Jordan Howard at RB. I really can't tell what will happen in the draft this year.

My super early prediction:

1. Garrett - obvious

2. Thomas - need their LEO in this scheme. Medical checks out. Physical freak. Combine very Beasley-esque for Kyle Shanahan

3. Allen - The reward is too great too pass on. Pro day will leave lasting impression

4. Fournette - BAP

It's going to be fun to watch unfold. We're getting a playmaker no matter what.
Bama already had there pro day

It does look more and more like Fournette, regardless of the first 3 picks, for a couple of reasons:

1)All the talk from the top brass about building a running game, and so far, we've done nothing about it.  Building a running game requires offensive linemen and a running back.  None of the prospective offensive linemen are rated as top 10 picks.  Although I have seen Fournette slipping out of the top 5 according to some well known draft experts, he's still rated above all the offensive linemen.

2)Our moves in free agency have left us with basically just the running game as unfinished business.

ON THE OTHER HAND, Fournette showed up at the Combine out of shape, and that might rub Coughlin the wrong way.

I sure wish we could trade down.   Because it looks like if we go offense at pick #4, it'll have to be a reach.

I think that both the 49ers and the Bears are all set with their stop-gap quarterbacks so the most likely outcome will be the best two players coming off the board at two and three. And sadly for us, that's probably Fournette and Thomas.

But, I suppose there is a chance one or both of those teams has brought in their FA quarterback to allow them to pick a QB, without the worry of having to start them. They would do what plenty of other teams have done - pick the best QB available and then sit them on the bench.

Um, so you're right - still difficult to call!

Why would the Bears or Niners take Fournette? Or any RB that high? SF has Hyde and Chi has Howard.

I think SF would see Fournette as a clear upgrade on Hyde. You're right about the Bears and Howard though.

When you're that bad, you shouldn't be taking a RB that high. Obvious exception is the cowboys who were a good team but had injuries.

I think Fournette will be there when we select. If we take him who knows.
Yeah lots of unknowns. I don't even know if Fournette will be there at 4. Could easily be a trade. Last year we were mocking Tunsil number 1 to Tennessee and didn't seem like a qb would go high then all of a sudden two teams traded up to the top, could happen again. Jets trade up to 1 to take a QB, Cousins gets dealt and Washington takes a QB, then Chicago gets Garrett. Probably won't happen but you never know what trades will happen
