Quote:Stay away from high-priced free agents. As tempting as it to sign someone like a Von Miller, more often than not, high-priced free agents don't pan out on their new team. This is especially true with the Jags.

Save the cap money to re-sign guys like Hurns and Robinson.

First and foremost Von Miller isn't making it to FA, secondly, the Jaguars have to spend lavishly on defense free agents as they can't improve this awful defense solely through the NFL draft, I expect the Jags to be active in FA early and often come March.

The bolded section is worthless hyperbole.

A high priced FA might be just what this young team needs.

Especially if it is at a postion of dire need (FS, DE)

Even if it misses, we have the room for a miss or two, since Dave has made most contracts team friendly.

Think Suh. Or Murray from the Eagles. The Jags wanted them both, and they've been awful. And historically, the Jags run on high-priced DE FAs has been pretty bad too.

And I'm not suggesting that we don't spend cap money on free agents. There are a lot of good free agents out there that can be had who don't cost a fortune.

Just don't go thinking that some guy who will command a premium price will be 'the missing piece.' That's what we thought about Hugh Douglas, too.

1. Sign Olivier Vernon and kick Jared Odrick inside to DT, this would give us insane speed off the edge with bookend DE's in Fowler/Vernon, this would also allow Sen'd and Jared to create havoc up the middle, we'd have a nasty D-line.

2. Sign Trumaine Johnson- This team needs another corner that can play press man on the outside, Trumaine Johnson has the size & skills to excel in this system, the Rams can't afford to sign Janoris Jenkins and Trumaine Johnson, he should be available.

3. Sign Bruce Irvin to play the Otto position- Dan Skuta has done a decent job in this position but this defense would really take off with a freak athlete like Irvin playing the Otto, he's been stellar in that position for Seattle, stuffing the fun and generating a consistent pass rush.

4. Draft Jaylon Smith to take over for Poz- Smith is arguably the best MLB prospect since Patrick Willis; I wouldn't be surprised if he ran his 40 in the 4.5 range, that speed shows up on film as he often covers receivers, well. A linebacker core of Irvin, Jaylon Smith, and Telvin Smith is crazy athletic an and frankly frightening for most offenses that like to operate inside the numbers, which is almost every offense in the NFL (Pittsburgh, Arizona, Jacksonville, Green Bay, and Indy or the exceptions), ultimately this defense needs speed, speed, and more speed I expect it to look entirely different in 2016.

If this were Madden, I would love this!

However I am not sure Vernon could play BIG end in our scheme. If he only plays LEO, would he sign for less money?

Tru Jonson would be a great addition.

Bruce Irvin (the original OTTO) also a good fit. Move him to LEO in the lightning package. Though he would be 29 after his first year. A 3 year deal should suffice. Heard he wants to go to ATL.

I like Myles Jack instead of Jaylon Smith, but maybe Im a homer. Smith would be a great addition, i would not be mad about the decision.
Quote:Thoughts on Bruce Irvin?

He is going to his hometown Falcons to play with his former DC.

I don't think the Jaguars should worry too much about scheme when going after pass rushers, young productive pass rushers like Vernon rarely hit the market, so when they're available (I think OV will be) a team like Jags should strongly entertain the idea of signing them, you can never have enough good rushers and good D-Coordinators will find creative ways to utilize that pass rush talent. Ultimately if we had bookend DE's like Vernon & Fowler I would think Gus is smart enough to scrap the idea of the "Big End" entirely as Vernon plays the run well, Fowler (at Florida) also played the run well, both guys are complete DE's.

- Pass rushing end opposite Fowler

- Elite "do it all" Otto LB

- Starting outside CB

- Ball hawk FS

- C/G (can AJ play C?)

SPEND IT. We've been not spending for 10 years. How'd that work out for us?
Honestly, we could be upgraded at just about every position on defense. Maybe our DT's are enough, but we could bolster everything.

Pretty much. WLB is about the only position that doesn't need additional help. Although, I do like the situation at DT, atleast for the 2016 season.
The team needs a LEO but we have to think that Fowler Jr is that guy, I mean everyone wants to credit GM Dave Caldwell (HC Gus input) in drafting so why not with Fowler?

Granted he has to prove himself and who knows what will happen now that he tore his ACL, will he be back to the way he was will he be injury prone forever?

I can see drafting a DE but not in the 1st round CB is too big of a need. What good is a guy that cant get to the QB because he can throw in 2 secs with weak corners?

You're my new best friend.

Now we're talking football.

Why draft another DE when we can sign one. FOWLER will be our pass rusher.

We need a shutdown corner for all these quick passes. Lawrence Taylor can't sack QB'S that throw the ball in 2 seconds. But guys like Norman, Peterson, Haden, Sherman can pick those passes off for 6 points.
DewIT brought up a great point.

We rank above average in sacks but only have 8 interceptions.

That stat says it all.

Our secondary struggles because of our lack of pass rush. Now I have been saying for awhile that we should be getting our pass rushers from FA, especially since they're proven players. I think the smartest thing to do is draft an entire secondary starting with Hargreaves/Ramsey, but it might not work this way. Let's say we are able to get a CB like Norman in FA. Would you still want to draft defensive backs? Cause we're also going to be targeting Eric Berry or Gipson and will probably end up with one of them. We basically have to wait and see how FA goes before we start talking about draft selections.

Gene Smith and Shack Harris high priced FA's aren't the same as Caldwell high priced FA's.

Some people weren't happy about over-paying for Thomas.... it seems it might work out pretty well.

FA is a risk. Period. The more talent, the more you have to risk.

This team is devoid of talent that rookies and injured 2nd year players aren't going to fix.

We need a veteran presence.... especially at FS and Leo.

While it would hurt to sign a D.Flo or Jerry Porter... having solid draft picks in place and a GM who seems to know what he is doing more than previous regimes, cushions the blow for taking a swing.

I'm not sure how serious the Jags were pursuing Suh... especially with that price tag.

Murray is awful because Chip is awful. In our scheme Murray would be doing just fine I think.

Bad examples of failed free agents.

All that being said... I don't think any one player (or coach) is a missing link.

We will need better play from LEO and FS, however that happens... and we'll still need everyone else to play at or better than the level they have been.

My point is that we have the cap room to spend, we should spend and not be afraid of a miss in FA.

Because we have Fowler, and Sample, and young guys... we just need the high price FA to bridge the gap effectively instead of just being some stop gap.

Along with more draft picks at those positions to ensure that we don't put all of our eggs in a rookie basket, or a 2nd year injured player, or a single high priced free agent
1. Kicker

2. Defense

3. OL
We need speed. Period.
