He's top 10 in tackles.
The tackles stat is nothing more than something for the fans to get excited about. Tackles alone do not tell the whole story.
Too many of Poz's "tackles" come about a second too late. He's either let a guy catch the pass and is trailing behind or he's making the tackle well past the line of scrimmage.
Being a tackle machine doesn't mean a guy isn't needing to be replaced.
Quote:I was really happy with this season, honestly. We broke through that "terrible" barrier that has been looming over our heads the past few years. We have been in every game besides the Patriots game and still have a shot at playoffs as crazy as that sounds.
Indeed the Jaguars can still win the division. They'd have to beat the Saints and Texans with the Texans also losing to the Titans, and the Colts losing to the Dolphins and Titans. No problem, right?

Yeah, let's just quit. Great mentality.
Quote:Not really. By year 3 of Rivera the Panthers were established in both sides of the ball, won 12 games and made the divisional playoffs. Gus has yet to top 12 wins total, so one is obviously not like the other.
They made the playoffs at 7-8-1. We are probably going to finish at 6-10. It's somewhat similar. I don't expect 16-0 next year, obviously, but I sure as heck want them to win the division and make the playoffs.

Wrong. They made the playoffs with 7 wins the year after, which made them back to back champs, which has since become back to back to back NFC South crowns. Gus has won a total of 12 games. They are in no way similar, at all.

Man you're just being super picky. You know what I mean.
It's a different situation, OBVIOUSLYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY, but it's a similar way they are building.

I could maybe see the comparison of Caldwell to Gettleman but comparing Gus to the current Coach of the Year is quite the stretch.

He's no Ron Rivera, but I will say that Rivera was on the hot seat at one point as well.
Quote:Blake Bortles today was 2 slightly better thrown balls away from another 300+ yard 3 td/ 1 rush td 1 int WINNING performance today. The BETTER news is he made those 2 reads correctly and attempted the throws as a year 2 quarterback, one being in crunch time. The JT throw was JUST out of reach and the read to Hurns at the end was a TD if he hits him in stride and the throw is just a little better. Blake Bortles is for real, our offense is for real. We made the right calls and reads, but were JUST off from having 30+ points up again. We get a better starting or depth LG with a healthy Linder and Cann next year, this offense is set. Also, that Lee catch showed some AMAZING ball skills and concentration from Lee, I flipped out when I saw the effort on that catch. High effort guys like that who make plays are what we need, he just needs to stay healthy.
Now the defense, we are a range safety and a rusher or 2 away from having a serviceable/good defense(assuming our corners develop at all). They played a poor game on third down, but also gave us some shots to win today with turnovers. Everywhere else on defense is at least OK, Linebacker might be something we need more depth at.
Coaching is such a crap chute, I honestly feel like if the defense has a bit more talent we win 10 game sthis year despite of who is the head coach. I would prefer a new HC, but change for the sake of change COULD be worse than what we have in Gus. I think Babich is done though, leaving more optimism to be had about the defense.
The loss hurts today, sure. It was deflating for me as well and all of us should be pretty upset. BUT! This team is CLOSE, for real this time (Not Mularkey, Jeans Miff close).
This is my positive outlook on things as of now, even if this loss hurts.
Blake Bortles, Allen Robinson & Allen Hurns are legit. M. Lee is getting there needs to be healthy, need a bit more from the TEs Julius, Thomas, M. Lewis (but most teams would like to have JT just a timing thing)...
The Offense has a lot of potential to be elite, just needs some fine tuning during the offseason but the talent is def. there!
On Defense its an entire different story... especially with DBs...

Right. At the end of year #2. Their turnaround was in his 3rd season and Gus has had a full 3. Were the Panthers unable to turn it around in year 3, he would have undoubtedly been let go. 3 seasons is an eternity in the NFL.
Lets assume they lose out and finish 5-11 which according to the NFL should've been 4-10 (ravens game), that would mean 4wins, 3 wins, 4 wins (11 total) for 48 games which is .229% winning for Gus as the Jaguars HC.
Is that acceptable for you?

Absolutely not. .550 and above please, anything much below that and you could probably stand to upgrade.
I could understand the first year, heck even the 2nd with a rookie QB and all the problems.. the 3rd year finishing with 6 wins wouldn't have been so bad considering all the injuries and what not but it was the way they lost a lot of the games this year and nothing has been done to stop the fact that every team in the NFL can pass on the Jaguars with ease.
We all figured Gus was a defensive Guru but the Jaguars haven't looked like that is true for his tenure.
I guess the owner is going to give him another year, hopefully the draft a great Corner from Florida & sign a real pass rusher or another great DB to help out so that next year will be different.
The way they lost? You mean how half of the losses should have been wins but were lost because of like one missed kick or one bad penalty, etc. Or how only one loss was a blowout loss with all the others within striking distance of a win.

I want Gus fired, but keep in mind Ron had Cam his first year

Good post. I agree.

Sloppy coaching will lead to sloppy play. I'll leave it at that.
Quote:I agree about Poz. He is a fan favorite and I understand why (great tackler, workhorse effort guy). He's played well at times this season but the reality is he's an average player and his lack of speed has really started to show with age. I was actually a little bummed that Poz got the start over Jordon Tripp today who played great last week.
I like Poz's 'work ethic', but he absolutely wasn't the best choice to have on the field Sunday for all the reasons you said. He is an excellent tackler, but he isn't so hot with pass coverage.

Experience yields consistency. These guys are close. They just gotta keep it going.

Another year of poor coaching will do too much negative. Bye Gus, I wish you the best in your future endeavors.
