Full Version: This team is relying on Bortles far too much

I'm seeing people saying they're "done" with Bortles and calling him a bust on here which is just crazy.

Blake is currently making an average of 39.5 passing attempts per game.

Let's look at some previous Jaguars QBs and compare them with Blake:

Blake Bortles is currently projected to throw for 4,293 passing yards with 32TD's and 18INT's.

Mark Brunell's highest average passing attempts in a season was 34.8 in 1996 - Brunell had 4,367 yards with 19TD's and 20INT's. This was Brunell's fourth year in the league and his second as starter.

Byron Leftwich had his highest attempts per game season in 2004 as a sophomore with 31.5. Leftwich threw for 2,941 yards with 15TD's and 10INT's across his 14 starts.

David Garrard's career high season for attempts per game was in 2008 (his 7th year in the league) with 33.4. He threw for 3,620 yards with 15TD's and 10INT's.

Brunell currently holds the Jaguars season record with 512 passing attempts in a season. Blake will break this record in game 13 of this season if he keeps throwing at current pace which is just ridiculous and will hit 632 on the season which would place his season at 19th in NFL history with only 8 QBs ahead of him (Matthew Stafford, Drew Bledsoe, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Warren Moon, Matt Ryan, Tony Romo and Tom Brady). Brady has only passed that mark once with 637 in 2012, Andrew Luck has never been asked to throw that much, neither has Roethlisberger and neither was Favre or many other QBs.

This is a guy who just last season the coaching staff didn't think was NFL ready. Stop forcing him to throw the ball so much!

When you cant run the ball consistently what do you do?

Get creative, use the option and use misdirections more (Yeldon is very good with these). Put both RB's on the field at once to confuse the defense. We're so vanilla when it comes to running the ball 90% of the time.

Run the wishbone and wildcat.
I agree.  He is a second year QB and they got him slinging it all over the place

In the long run it might pay off.

In his first 2 seasons, he will have seen so many different looks.

This past off season, he worked on his mechanics. This upcoming off season will probably be more mechanics but also some serious film study.
This has become a passing league. He has to adjust.

We do throw the ball too much for my liking.  The offense doesn't seem overly creative and despite our passing offense success...I still don't like the offense.

I can't fault the OC for not running the ball.  It's basically a wasted down right now.

I think we do rely on him to much but I think there is a method to the madness. All the time we talk about drafting a young guy and let him rip it all over the field to see if he developes and learns. Well this staff is doing that and it seems to be working. I think he does have to do a lot but I think it will pay off a year or so from now once they put the rest of the team around him. Honestly they should have did this last year.

Let him get those lumps out the way now. He already looks worlds better than out last 4 qbs and what he looked like last year. If he goes up more from this we will be dominant once a defense and oline get in place.
We can't do anything on the groind , the defense can't stop anyone...him getting the full load is just how it is. He has to keep us in games which is why I don't fault him too much when he [BLEEP] up.

What are you talking about? They averaged 5 yards per carry yesterday, the Jaguars needed to run the ball at least 25-30 times against the Chargers last ranked Run D yesterday, it keeps our awful defense and Philip Rivers off the field, abandoning the run game against a team like that is inexcusable. It's unrealistic to expect 5-6 yards a carry, 1-2 yards here and there is fine, if you keep running it eventually you'll pop one. Is almost as if Greg Olson panics when we're not picking up 8-10 yards in the run game at a time, no one in the NFL does that, you need to stick with it though.
I don't know, I quite enjoy being a passing team for once.

I agree with this, they're clearly trying to develop him, with a target of 40-45 throws per game.
People have said this above but I'd like to chime in to agree. This might actually help us long term. Getting more reps against NFL defenses. I mean, we talk about how many starts a player has when talking about experience. But how many reps did you get in those starts? He will be battle tested soon
I don't know why we went away from the run yesterday and started chucking it so much.  Yeldon was actually doing pretty well and SD had one of the worst run defenses in the league.

Was he?  Minus the 20 something yard one he broke off, he looked like he was getting stuffed the majority of the game.
I'm telling you, Brunnell wasn't even a good QB. look at his numbers. Bortles is way better than Mark. Garrard was too

Maybe I'm thinking of the passes he caught, but I remember him doing well.  Either way it's ridiculous that he got 9 carries against one of the worst run D's in the league.  I get our defense is part of the reason we couldn't stick with it, but it's still frustrating.  He needs more red zone touches also.
I think people forget Blake is just 23 years old, on pace for more than 30 touchdowns. When you throw is as much as he has (5th in the league in pass attempts, as of last week) he's bound to make mistakes.

If people are expecting Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady to walk into that locker room, they're nuts. Blake will never be that type of player; he's always going to make some mistakes, a la Favre. He has that gunslinger mentality and, personally, I like that about him.

It's okay to point out his faults, but don't bury the kid. He's going to be very good.

Nah.
