Quote:That is recency bias.  Every year there are rashes and bunches of injuries.  Look at the play and it is down everywhere.

Reasons that play is down:

1. The Golden Age of quarterbacks is drawing to a close. Manning, Brees, Rodgers, and Rivers are starting to decline as they age out (Brady not quite yet though) and the guys who are up and coming aren't as good.

2. The proliferation of the Spread in college means offensive players, especially linemen and qbs, who enter are unsuited to the pro offense.

3. Changes to the rules mean that defenses are forced to play at a less than optimal level.

4. Increased player safety requirements reduce the amount of practice time which leads to sloppy play and slower development.

Put it together and parity means everyone but a few are 4 and 6 or worse.

Well said. Rodgers, can't see the decline. He's turning 32.

Why do peeps often laud Brees and Rivers? Big Ben, not so much.

On Point one we see QBs come and go and yes that is impacting play.

Points 2 through 4 - are very much driving down the level of play.  Watching the game is still enjoyable and the athletic ability on display remains top notch, however all of these things are impacting team play.  It is a huge advantage to have a QB and a system that remains in tact year to year.  When you only have to focus on a few players picking up your system you can work around the practice restrictions and slow development.
