Uhhhhhh Reggie Freakin Nelson....

Landry wasn't bad....

but man... by 2012 we had downgraded the position from Nelson, to Landry, to Prosinski... lulz
The Safety group will still require additional depth. You might be okay going into the year with Gipson and Church, but this is not Grant and Darius (not even close). Even if you use last season as a bar, the deviation of play will only be so much better. Church is not the tackler that Cyp was, but slightly better in coverage with more wear and tear.

Going off of comments, news reports out of Dallas, it appears Church has some strong leadership ability that Cyp mus have lacked so maybe there is an upgrade in that sense. The Church Signing has more to do with the winning-disciplined-love of football philosophy that Coughlin wants to install more than being a great talent upgrade.

However the need is really going to come in 2018 or 2019 because when it comes to on the field play, the position is still going to struggle in some areas. Gipson has not established himself as a lock for starting at FS, nor garner a re-signing. I'd be looking for UFA's and some drafted depth for sure.

Reggie Nelson was flat out terrible while he was here.  It wasn't until he was with Cincy that he remembered how to football.
I'm holding onto the belief that Gipson wasn't used properly last season, so if the scheme is changed to get the most out of him, which in Cleveland was really good, then he will be a great player for this team.

I thought that I had read somewhere that Gus has slightly handicapped Gibson. I remember something about them telling him to sit back and basically just prevent big plays from happening rather than ball hawk and go for interceptions which is sort of what made him in Cleveland.

Not sure how much of this is true but I am willing to give him one more year. Before I start saying he is a bust

Our pass defense wouldn't have been as solid if the FS play was garbage. He just didn't force the turnovers we had expected, but we also didn't have a consistent pass rush to allow for turnovers to occur.

He definitely needs to take a step forward this year, but he wasn't bad last year and I'm definitely not worried about FS. I assume there's going to be a scheme change and we play more to players strengths as this whole new coaching staff/TC has stated, which should bring some optimism to that.

I think you and I may see what we're hoping for in terms of scheming the safeties.

Quote:Church will also allow the Jaguars to mix things up because of his experience playing strong and free safety.

<p style="color:rgb(70,70,70);font-family:'Open Sans', sans-serif;font-size:16px;">“I bet you see them using [free safety Tashaun] Gipson in the box more because [Church] can play free safety, too,” a league source said.

Gipson is good. Just wasn't utilized correctly last season.
