Quote:No matter how you slice it, it was an exciting win. Somewhat reminiscient of the early Jags years when they'd scratch out a close win. This team is way more competitive than they've been the past two years and the arrow is clearly pointing up. The future's as bright for this team as it is for the team in my avatar. I feel sorry for the fans that don't realize this to be true.
hendershot...

I'm waiting to see this team defeat a 'good team'. No wait.... I'm waiting to see this team even be competitive against a good team. So far, we've done nothing but just barely squeak out narrow wins over teams who are 'circling the drain' due to injuries and other issues this season.

Your view of this team speaks volumes of your dedication as a fan... but it certainly compromises the value of your point of view about the Jaguars to anyone who is somewhat more objective.

I feel sorry for fans like you living in a perpetual state of delusion. I'm glad we got a win... but the Jags remain bottom of the barrel bad. They've done nothing to prove me wrong. I'm still waiting to see it on the field.

I am curious if you watch other NFL games?  Did you think the Panthers would be undefeated?  Did you think the Detroit Lions would beat the Packers at Lambeau?  Did you think that Washington would thump the Saints?

The NFL is very mediocre now and what we witnessed yesterday is part of the poor play this year.  The arrow is pointing up at the skill positions.  I'm surprised we did well when you watched the offensive line get pushed around all day.  Yeah the team needed significant help from the Ravens but that has been the story of their season this year.  I'm not going to make believe our secondary is fixed or we are set at any position on the team but at least the team is improving and is watchable.

Just enjoy the season as best you can.

I think it was 1999,  we went 14-2, and we did not beat a single team with a winning record.  That's the way I recall it.  Correct me if I am wrong.
I'm just glad Bortles didn't follow Frangie's advice and spike it on 4th down...

We're all waiting for that and it will happen but first we need to win against mediocre teams first. We've not really done that in the last 2 years. As you can see now, we're starting to be able to win those or at least be within a touchdown of wining them. The winning against good teams is the next step, but probably won't be til next season. This season is what it is - much better than last season and capable of being in it until the end. That's a huge improvement.

There's no reason to believe year 3 for this team (Bortles, WR's) will be even better, so a lot of these losses that were oh-so-close, should be wins.
I would still get rid of Myers. Too many misses. Yes, he won the game yesterday but it's possible we would of never been in that spot if he didnt shank a 26 yarder.
Quote:The prevailing theory headed into the second half of the season was that the Jaguars schedule contained a bunch of winnable games, beginning with Baltimore today.  Thus far, it has proven true.

My thoughts.

1.  Jason Meyers, I take back what I said after you shanked that 26 yard FG.  Way to redeem yourself for this game.  Still owe us another game winning FG, but good job closing this game out.

2.  I am not one to criticize play calling much, but I didn't care for the play selection in this game.  I thought the team operated too much out of the spread, and runs to the left were nearly non existent.  As aggressively as the Ravens were playing defensively, I would have liked to see more screens to RBs and quck hitting running plays.

3.  I thought Bortles did not have a good game.  Lots of his passes were batted at the LOS, and his holding onto the ball excessively long led to an unnecessary sack and INT.  He was also behind on some key throws to Julius Thomas and Marqise LeeHe did throw two TDs, but missed an easy 3rd TD when he didn't see Marcedes Lewis wide open.  Her also had a near INT dropped on that last drive.  But, the last drive, he did what the team needed to do to get in position to have his face mask twisted.

4.  Once again, I thought the run defense did a good job overall.  However it seems to have come at the expense of pass defense.  The Ravens had repeated success with play action bootlegs to the right.  The Jaguars really didn't shut that down until the end of the game.

5.  Great game by Davon House with 2 INTs and a pass defensed.

6.  Myers' game winning FG and Marshall's recovery of the Ravens' muffed punt notwithstanding, I thought the Special teams once again had a bad bad game.  Way too many return yards allowed.  What is it going to take to get good kick coverage?

7. Way to tough it out Hurns, who had some clutch catches in the game.  Also, a hearty welcome back to the Albino Tiger, who had a drop or two to add to his late catches.

8.  Nice to have an Alualu positive play sighting on the fumble recovery.

9.  Bottom line:  Glad to see the Jaguars pull out one of these close games, even though like in the Buffalo game, they seemed to try hard to give the game away.  Now let's try to put two in a row together this tThursday against the loathsome tacks.

They tried running about 3-4 screens, which I think three off them were batted down or hit someone in the back with the throw.  They were good play calls at the time as the Ravens were getting some rush, so would have setup nice.

D.Rob with the drop in the 2nd quarter could have been a huge play.  He had 10 yards and everyone had their backs to him when he dropped it.  I like that play call, but would rather see Lee the recipient of that pass. I'm just not sure what Denard's value is at this point.

I think they're trying some things in ST in kick coverage.  Saw some different guys out there this week but for sure, need to shore up those returns.

I do feel like leaving the game, we were the better team again.  That does't mean we will win being the better team, but a few times this year we have lost and I felt we were the better team.  It's nice to win one of those.

I wonder why there were so many batted balls.

Was it something the Ravens saw on film?  Are they exceptionally well coached in that regard?

As to your closing statement, while I am not sure the Jaguars were the better team yesterday, it does feel good to win one of those games.

Can't rewatch the game, but I noted several throws by Blake where the ball dropped near his waist (couple were batted). Given his inaccuracies during the game, it makes me wonder if his mechanics were all over the place in this game.

Assuming mechanics were an issue, I wonder if the pressure the past few weeks has anything to do with that.
By the way, why is our special teams coach still employed?
Quote:My main impression is this team is still not good.

Impression 2 is the coaching is still not good.

How we won this game is a mystery.
the flip side is...

with 4 turnovers how did we not run away with it?

I mean... we could be turning that corner..... lose by a lot really bad, lose by a little because we're not good, lose by a little by beating ourselves, win the close ones, next step is winning normally before we get to move on to beating people on the regular and occasionally blowing out bad teams...

the progress is there.... it's just very slow....

hopefully we see more of it this season....

I don't know. My opinion isn't very popular with some but I don't see this team ever winning anything great with Gus Bradley. No question in my mind. This is a below average staff in terms of HC/OC/DC. It is not good enough.

Your in the shotgun and within 2 seconds you have a dirty pocket with the defense closing on you fast.  You revert to your baseline mechanics.  In this case there is a bit of a hitch and the other team is having a field day.  On some of those outs he doesn't have snap on the ball and the routes are getting jumped big time.

Offensive coaching staff needs to mix in some roll outs and figure out some wrinkles.  We are far enough along this season that the tape is fully digested and the other team's plans are negating us some.

BB has been pummeled a bit the last few weeks and I'm betting he has some pain issues going.  Sure he isn't on the injury report but at this point the season grind is breaking through the improved mechanics.

Which is the same thing that happened last season. By the time the year ended (and apparently he had some injuries), his mechanics was shot. That said, I don't think it was THAT bad yesterday. There were a handful that stood out because they replayed it, but there were a few tough passes he made that were textbook also.

More concerning for me, is yet again Blake shows a penchant for terrible decision making in the clutch. He really should have had two game-ending INTs (one that ARob had to defend, the other the guy just dropped).

After last week, you'd think he'd have a better regard for the ball with the game on the line. But as much plays he makes, this is becoming a trend for him and it might be what keeps him from being a "great" QB. He'll be good enough of course, just never elite. Think along the lines of Jay Cutler, Stafford, etc.
Moved up to 6th in defense against the run. That's pretty darn good.

they didn't even try to run on us lol

14 attempts for Forsett?

They had every intention of throwing for 50 times against us lol

But... maybe cuz they knew they couldnt run on us
