This article is an interesting read. To sum it up, a guy's "Explosion Number" is his bench press + vertical jump + broad jump in feet. Anything above a 70 is considered explosive. It's mainly for DL and rush OLBS in a 3-4. Basically, if you're over 70 you're more likely to be elite, but obviously it has it flaws. Mainly though, when considering a first round selection college stud, if he's over a 70 or near it, it's been pretty wild how some of these guys have done.

Ngakoue scored well with a 70.33, Fowler...60.83, not so much. Last year, Joey Bosa was a 66.

Elites include Vic Beasley at ridiculous 86.86, J.J. Watt at 84, and a few others.

SO...who scored well in this year's combine among people the Jags could take in round one? Myles Garret scored numero uno with some eye popping numbers.  33 reps + 41 vert + 10.66 broad jump = 84.66...Solomon Thomas- 30 reps + 35 vert + 10.5 broad jump = 75.5...Derek Barnett (incomplete) (didn't do reps) + 31 vert + 9.75 broad jump = 40.75.

Potential second rounders= Taco Charlton 25 reps +  33 vert + 9.66 broad jump= 67.66

Carl Lawson 35 reps + 33 vert + 9.5 broad jump= 77.5

Charles Harris 21 reps + 32 vert + 9.08 broad jump= 62.08

Later round "gems"...

Derek Rivers 30 + 35 vert + 10.25 broad jump = 75.25   here's a blurb http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/playe...rek-rivers

Haason Reddick 24 reps 36.5vert+ 11.08 broad jump=  71.58  http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/haas...id=2557887

Anyway, that's all I gotta say. An interesting article and just wanted to post some guys that we could potentially take and how it corresponds to this. Ya'll feel free to ridicule me, discuss, ridicule some more, etc. etc....
Cool very interesting.

Definitely has flaws... 5 additional reps is worth more than twice the difference between an 11 ft broad jump and a 9 ft broad jump.

How are bench reps... the most influential stat here... even a measure of explosion?

I couldn't tell ya. Just thought it was a good read and different than all the same draft-talk I've read the past, oh, I dunno, forever. But, I see your point and it is valid.

I guess the idea is that if it's simply to push our 30 reps then he's probably more explosive hitting the pads with his hands. I think the legs are more important but I guess I see the point.

I only saw Bosa and Watt as 80+. Was there anyone else?
Very interesting although I agree the bench press is pretty pointless.

I also personally think the 10 yard split should be added in seeing as how its pretty much the direct result of explosiveness. The first 10 yards of a sprint is all about how much you can explode in the first 2/3 steps so I think if you are making an explosion statistic it should be in that..

Carl Lawson is a 77.5 ... wow... explosive.

Myles Garrett is an 84.67.

Forest Lamp is a 70.75.

On the flip side, McCaffrey with his 10 reps is only a 57.58. ...he must not be explosive at all.

Yeah there is very little correlation to bench press and success, even for interior lineman. It just doesn't do a good job proving functional strength.

Also...late round gems with Reddick and Rivers? They might both be gone before we pick at 35...

It's for pass rushers.

Agreed on Reddick at least. That dude might not even make it out of the First Round now.

Why spoil it, it was just getting fun.
Interesting. How much actual weights it holds is questionable but that Fowler number. Oooiiiiii.......

It's even worse when you consider the most important drill for pass rush predictability, the 3 cone, was actually his worst drill...

so are you saying he will never be a good pass rusher?  just to be clear

"Good" in the way most Jags fans think, no. If he reaches his potential I said predraft he is a lot like Sheard, which I think is still apt. 6-8 sacks a year, a lot of them effort/cleanup variety. Not bad for the third or ideally fourth best pass rusher on a dline.
