Eh, what choice do we really have? This team still needs more playmakers, on defense moreso on offense (where we can hope for continued development of Blake/AllenS/Thomas). Defense I think we can hope that Colvin and Telvin can emerge, maybe Fowler and Marks to be 100% next season and provide rush. But with it being year 4 of DC/Gus (if both/either or lasts like they are rumored to be), they can't possibly afford to wait on more draft picks to shore up the defense.

They need players that can help this team from day one next season.
Quote:Perhaps. Caldwell has not been perfect but it's not an exact science and I think he's done pretty well.

Eh I disagree that he's done pretty well, when none of his free-agent signings have been true difference makers so far and the cheaper options have outplayed the more expensive options.

Can you point to any teams that have markedly outperformed the Jaguars in FA recently? Maybe there are a bunch of teams that have crushed it in FA that I am not thinking of...maybe not. Perhaps you can enlighten me.
Are you seriously suggesting the Jaguars didn't spend enough money in FA this year? Did anybody spend more? Teams don't spend their cap space on going crazy in FA, they do it on re-signing their own talented players. Unfortunately this team didn't have players worth re-signing. Once Caldwell's draft classes start reaching the end of their rookie contracts you'll see the money being spent.

Yes, you do want to spend for the sake of spending, because the cap floor exists.
I would like a Safety, LB, DE, CB
Well we likely could have had Suh if we wanted him since we could've outbid Miami (i.e. overpaid for him). Would that have made anyone happy? I mean the guy is regularly in trouble and then there's the "freelancing" he was apparently doing when on the field. Mccourty would have been nice but though tempted as he was, he wanted to stay with the pats for less money and who wouldn't want to play on a perennial playoff/Super Bowl team?

We'll be active in free agency in the next few years and we'll probably get a few guys that really contribute, but I don't think we'll ever sign a guy like Suh or Mario Williams who sign record free agent contracts. I think the bulk of that free cap space will be going toward resigning our own guys once it's their turn. We're poised to be able to draft, develop and keep most or all of our elite talent. Not a bad position to be in.
Not to knock Roy Miller too hard, but we can do better at NT. I keep thinking how the NT position is always said to be of utmost importance in a 3-4, and the Jaguars defense basically is a 3-4 disguised as a 4-3. With a stud NT up front, everything just might come together.

I suggest in the draft forum that we might look to draft A'Shawn Robinson out of Alabama for this role. He would make sense perhaps with a first round pick in the teens, although a prize free agent would also do the trick.

You get what you pay for. Gus is tied for the lowest salary as a head coach. Our payroll is 30m under every team we face off in the regular season.

Hard to imagine if we had one or two more starter caliber players and a competent head coach, we wouldn't be over .500. Colts/texans/Bucs were winnable games.
What does that jump to when we cut Beadles, Lewis, Gerhart, etc?

Give me Gipson (unless Sample proves to be the guy) and Irvin.
Free Agency has proven not to build teams, the draft does.  Fill gaps as needed, but save that money to re-sign the talent you draft.  We haven't had this issue in a long time because our drafting has been awful, but it's coming on now in the next few years.

Be patient and keep drafting well, Caldwell!

Oh, before i forget, get a new coach.

100%

Bucs and Eagles are living proof of that.
Hurns will be holding out in the offseason wanting a raise from his undrafted contract.

Pay him early! If you pay him before his rookie contract ends it shows player loyalty and you may get a discount by getting it done sooner rather than waiting for him to really blow up.

I highly highly doubt that. He doesn't seem like the kind to get greedy like that

Too bad he can't according to the CBA. He's headed towards RFA status.
One thing I'd like to do is extend the contracts of Hurns and A-Rob.

Gotta be 3 years I believe

Redskins and the Raiders could also be in that proof, although the Raiders have drafted well, and they have a decent head coach
The reason we have so much money is because the team has drafted so bad since 2003 that we have never had to resign our own guys to 90 and 100 million dollar deals. Teams like the packers are at their cap because all of their money is locked up in Rodgers, Raji, Sheilds, Mathews, Bulaga, Sutton, Hyde, etc... Hopefully we will finally have to resign our own qb and wideouts to fat contracts.
