It's time for loyal Jaguar fans to look towards the future. Looks like the team will have a new coach next season and possibly a new G.M., although Shad may give Caldwell 1 more year. That being said, which current players on the roster should be kept and which free agents/draft choices should be targeted?
Players to build around (foundation): Bortles, A. Robinson, Hurns, Thomas, Linder, Parnell, Cann, Yeldon on offense
On defense: Marks, Fowler, T. Smith, Colvin.
That makes 12 current players, and to be fair, still not sure about Bortles (inconsistent), Fowler and Cann.
Players to keep for depth and potential starter: Bowanko, Denard, Walters (reliable in slot), Greene, Joeckel(see below)- on offense.
On defense: Abry Jones, Skuta, Sample, Davis, Cyprien (until his contract runs out- must improve), Michael Bennett, Poz (until
they get more speed at this position
Player to target in free agency:
1. T.Y. Hilton- could be available. Speedy weapon to complement the two Allen's.
2. Tashaun Gipson- Team desperately needs free safety.
3. Nigel Bradham- Linebacker upgrade.
4. Coby Fleener- Upgrade at 2nd tight end.
5. Bruce Irvin- another Leo. Had 2 sacks yesterday. Will be 28.
Draft:
The first pick will be in the top 6 again. It comes down to either a left tackle (Tunsil or Stanley) or a shutdown corner ( Hargreaves). This will depend on how Joeckel performs the rest of the season. If he doesn't improve his pass protection, they may have to go for the left tackle. With Fowler, Irvin, a healthy Marks, Bennett and Skuta they should take pressure off our corners. Gipson will also help greatly.
For the remainder of the draft, they need to take the BAP at cornerback in round 2 and take the BAP on defense for the last 5 round, Can the Jags win with these players moving forward?
Bortles
Yeldon/Robinson
Robinson/Hurns/Hilton/Greene/Walters
Parnell/Tunsil/Linder/Cann/Bowanko
Thomas/Fleener
Fowler/Marks/Irvin/ Jones/Bennett/Davis
Smith/Bradham/Skuta/Poz
Gipson/Sample or Cyprien
Colvin/House/2nd round pick in 2016
Shad will have to pay big bucks to get most of those free agents, but he has no choice. If Bortles does continue to develop, I believe the above roster would be capable of contending for a wild card next season and continue to improve after that? Your thoughts (other than recommending I be committed)?
