I was one of those willing to give Gus this season to finally start to turn things around. It hasn't happened, and it doesn't really look like it will. We're seeing incremental improvements, but for every step forward we take, we take 2 backwards elsewhere, either by injury or sheer performance gaffes.
When the team has both young and mature players making stupid, boneheaded mistakes, it is clear the attention to detail isn't where it needs to be in game planning and preparation. I don't see Gus turning that around before the end of this season. I don't think he's lost the team, but I do think he's at a point where he doesn't have any answers for how to overcome the obstacles this team is facing right now.
This honestly sums it up. I, too, was supportive of Gus going into this season. Unfortunately, he is what he is, and I don't really think we need 10 more games to see it. It's obvious. He may simply have a ceiling of being a Coordinator. Nothing wrong with that. When he's released as HC, another team will almost certainly pick him up as a Coordinator.
Has the team improved while he was here? Absolutely. However, they also ABSOLUTELY have not improved nearly enough to justify retaining him.
I'm still supportive of Caldwell, simply because the overall talent level on the team is noticibly higher than we've seen in years. and he inheritted an absolute MESS of a roster. Has he hit 100%? No. No GM ever will. I DO think he's done enough to warrant an extension and a shot with a 2nd Coach. Hell, I'm legitimately excited when the draft comes around to see what he'll do to improve the roster even more!
