Quote:Stephon Gilmore is decent and AJ Bouye only flashed this year.

Tough decision but I would go with neither really. Too many talented DBs in the draft but I'd definitely take Bouye over Gilmore just to weaken our rival.
2nd yr CB in Ramsey, Colvin, Josh Johnson, and what else at CB after letting Prince leave and dealing House?

Not interested in having THAT young of a CB crew. No way with our win now mindset we do that either.

I'm all on the Gillmore/Bouye/Kirkpatrick bandwagon.
I'm all for upgrading the CB position, but in my opinion, OG is the #1 priority. As for Bouye, count me out. Yes, he had a great year, but I need to see a bigger resume from a player for me to commit to a large contract. Gilmore and Logan Ryan are the guys I go for and if they can't be had, I try to re-sign Amakamara to a reasonable deal. I also spend a high to mid round pick on a CB as well. You can never have too many good CB's.

If you sign Bouye he might have just had his career year, yes, but he was so much better and especially more consistent last year than anyone else in this FA CB class. Gilmore's lows were even lower than Prince's, and Logan Ryan was benched until they moved him to inside corner and he flourished.

What's most concerning to me about Bouye is that he played for the number 1 defense in the nfl with an excellent pass rush. He might crumble with our mediocre pass rush

Agreed.

What I like about Gilmore is that he's a gambler who forces turnovers. Yes, sometimes that kind of play will bite you in the butt, but it also creates big plays, which we sorely lack. Bouye could also fall apart playing for a far inferior defense than he had in Houston. There, he was on an elite defense that harassed opposing QB's on almost every play. He will face a big dropoff here. Logan Ryan is not my first choice, but I would definitely take him over Bouye. He's just too much of a gamble for me. This is a very deep draft at CB as well and I would definitely draft one somewhere on day 2. I wouldn't be surprised if we found a starter there.
Bouyes one year is better than anything Ryan has done ever, Ryan is straight up mediocre. And Ryan played in an extremely good defense too so I have no idea why he would get priority over Bouye.

Just because bouye was only good for one year doesnt mean he cant continue to be, thats what player development is all about.

Josh Norman is a prime example of this.

I totally agree with this statement, but you have to admit, it is a major risk to sign a guy to a big contract when he's only done it for one year and he comes from one of the top 3 defenses in the NFL. He could be very good, but he could also be a total bust if you take him out of the system he thrived in. I remember when everyone wanted Jeremy Parnell, because he had one really good year in Dallas as a spot starter. Some fans thought he would play the same way here, that he did in Dallas. Look how that turned out. If I can't get a really good starting CB in free agency who has proven his worth for a few seasons, I'd rather gamble on one in the draft. It would be less of a risk and this draft is loaded with really good CB prospects.

Huh? Norman was established as Carolina's lockdown corner for at least 2 years prior to being shipped out. In 2014 and 2015 he combined for 30 PD and 6 interceptions. He was far from a "one year wonder."

My mistake. I only remember hearing about him that last season before FA. Though admittedly I don't follow Carolina closely.

Hopefully we get Bouye and he follows that path.
Jourdan Lewis. Sleeper pick. Best cover corner in the NCAA. Could put him in the slot or outside. He's undersized but is a baller.
Bouye was outstanding last season, but I am not even sure he is the 2nd best CB on the Texans. Johnathon Joseph and Kareem Jackson are no scrubs. Not sure if I would want to pay him #1 CB money.

Wasn't he the guy that got constantly burned against Ohio state of whoever they played their last game against?
I really think bouyes performance was greatly inflated by the talent around him.

He benefitted from that pass rush quite a bit, but I think he showed some proper cover skills.

I'm going to try to watch some tinhorns footage later today and get a better read on this dynamic.

I wouldn't say he constantly got burned but he did get beat by Samuels a few times. But he made his fair share of plays and was really good throughout the whole season.

Caldwell said in his presser he's letting Prince and Cyp test the market.
