Quote:See, here's where I get a little fuzzy with this whole new arrangement.
Has Caldwell been demoted to Top Scout, and his job is now to fill out the card for Tom?
No its pretty clear Tom will consult with Dave on pretty much everything.
Marrone and Tom are the two guys with the biggest influence on the jaguars now so naturally if we do well or do bad I'll attribute it to them rather than Dave.

Again, what does that mean?
Is he giving simply giving Caldwell guidance/advice (
I would pick x, I prefer x over y if it's between the two) or is he taking the stick when he feels he has to ("
we" are going to pick x, "we" are going to pick x over y if it's between the two)?
Is Caldwell merely going to be the mouse in Tom's pocket when it comes to "we?"
We don't know. Do we? I'm sure we all have opinions. But who knows?
TC will have final say on the draft pick.

I'd imagine it will be a mixture of that. Especially for the draft where most teams have more of a roundtable discussion on prospects to create the draft board. I don't think it will simply be tom stacking up prospects on the board whichever way he wants but he will have the final say on the picks.
What we do know though is that Tom is signing off on every big decision so whether good or bad he will be the one accountable. Marrone for the on the field stuff of course.
Interesting takes... how, and why, has Caldwell now become Teflon Dave?
I wish I could be part of a big screw up, and come out of it with less responsibility and less accountability... all without changing job title and compensation.
A demotion without any negatives whatsoever.
Everyone else will carry the water, and he slides under the radar.
This is what I'm hearing.

I thought as much was obvious. In exchange, Davey can keep his title and learn his craft, and maybe even wear the big boy pants again one day if he plays nice.
Quote:TC will have final say on the draft pick.
And everything else involving the team. The dude has control over the clocks for crying out loud.
Alfie also said we were taking Sammy Watkins in 2014.

Do you disagree?
Its going to be nigh on impossible to see Caldwell's fingerprints on team decisions unless they are actually told to us. Very hard to dish out blame to someone when you have no idea what they have done.

Did you watch Coughlin's presser and listen to Caldwell's radio interview? I felt a little bit clearer on this "brain-trust" functionality after doing both.
Coughlin talked of "relying on Dave and Doug to help him evaluate the roster" and emphasized the F.O. working as a team.
Caldwell praised the level of communication between the 3 of them and lauded having Coughlin there to "bounce ideas off of." When he talked about preparing for the draft it sounded like he's doing exactly what he has in prior years.
It really sounds as if Dave has simply been given a new boss that has veto power.
I don't get the gripe with this arrangement. We've added a quality football guy to the F.O. who can check and balance a young GM that has landed some quality talent in mid-rounds yet screwed up a coaching hire and a couple of early picks.
How does this make him "teflon" exactly?
If Blake flames out in 2017 and TC doesn't have glowing things to say about Caldwell next February, Khan could very conceivably issue walking papers.
Hiring Tom just seems like a way of
helping Caldwell and Marrone. I like that idea. I like the arrangement and feel pretty good about them collectively handling personnel moves this offseason.
Who really gives a flying [BLEEP] what Alfie thinks?
I don't think we'll have an accurate idea until after next Thursday
Thomas would not be a reach at 4.
Quote:We're switching to a 3-4, R rated lyrics at an open practice is not inappropriate but is a "teachable moment" for fans with young children, hot dog is a sandwich...
could you elaborate on how the hotdog comment manifested?
Quote:I feel like Solomon Thomas at 4 would be a reach. He's great but not top 5 great. Not when you potentially have Jamal Adams, Fournette or Allen on the board.
Solomon Thomas and Jonathan Allen are right there as prospects and have damn near identical playing styles...so if you think Allen is clearly worth #4 than you need to watch more of Thomas.
I prefer Allen, but they are pretty much 1a/1b after watching more of Thomas. Freak athlete.
It might become more likely if we fail to land anyone in free agency, but Thomas a four (when there are so many other good players around) seems a bit of a stretch.
If Allen somehow makes it to four then maybe he's onto something.
But as someone else said, his view is not really any more informed than fans on this forum. He just has a blog.

That's the root of the problem. It seems like we've taken a step back towards the "committee" approach we abandoned years ago.
What's old is new again. Repeating the same organizational mistakes.
So, Caldwell is now not responsible, but instead it's Tom.
Tom says it's Khan's team, not his.
We're all back to "team" (the Jack/Shack/Gene "committee" approach) without individual accountability.
So, don't be surprised if fans start to pick the person they like/dislike to assign praise/blame.
As Vic would say, "watch this." If you hadn't noticed, it's already started.

Had to work out if this is a TTR post or not.
I don't think its as complicated as you make out. Marrone deserves blame or praise for all the on the field stuff. It will be quite easy to see his work taking place.
For the off field stuff Coughlin is the head honcho and signs off on everything so he deserves the blame or praise.
Look at the Miami Heat. Pat Riley is the team president , Andy Elisburg is the GM and Eric Spoelstra is the HC. Pat doesn't do much draft stuff but he signs off on everything and has his stamp all over the organization. When people talk about the Heat the only two guys you hear about are the great work Spoelstra does or how Pat does running the team. Its the exact same structure as here.

I saw that presser and came away with the same perspective.
What is unclear to me are the roles each will have in the draft/college scouting. Will TC defer to Caldwell's ranking of players, but just decide which player is ultimately taken at the slot?

Have you watched Thomas play? That dude is an animal and is one of the 5 best players in this draft.
Allen, Garrett, Thomas, Adams and Hooker are the top 5 players in this draft IMO.
