1. My impression was that the defense was better when Abry Jones was playing instead of Roy Miller. Did anyone else notice this?

2. Yes, Bortles twice threw to a covered Marcedes when ARob was wide open, but Bortles had a solid game. He wasn't the problem.

This team finally scored enough points to win a game and couldnt.. This loss is on Gus and the defense..

I noticed this too. Any chance of Miller and Jones starting?

Bortles hit on better than 66% of his passes in addition to the four TD's. He definitely was not a problem, much less THE problem.
Quote:Sorry man.  You're wrong.  He didn't lock on recievers like you say.  He may have locked on to his first 2 reads a couple times.   And 1 time he didn't recognize single coverage opposite the trips package, but what you just wrote isn't accurate as to how successful BB5 was.

He went through his progressions more times than not.  If you watched any of the tacks game (which I did), you'll see a QB in Mariotta that locks on his first reciever.  BB5 doesn't do that...
Yeah, I'm not sure where the locking in comments are coming from today. Looked like Yeldon was option 4 on his touchdown.
Jaguars. Worst team in the NFL. Hands down.

Heads should roll Monday.

Gus is making Shad look like a chump.

Nobody looks like a chump unless Gus is the head coach on Tuesday after the season is over...
I think Bortles play is a huge positive. The only chance we have of attracting a top coaching candidate is if Bortles shows the potential for greatness.

Hopefully a few players on defense getting healthy can fix some of todays issues on defense.

I think this offense is very attractive to a potential HC...  I think the D is as well... The pieces are then, we just need to get a better HC to pull it all together...

Man, I wish Gus was the guy...  He's just not...  It's a shame...  But he'll pick up as a DC somewhere else...
The Offense did their job this weekend,  but the defense was poor to say the least.  I believe the blame is square on the Defensive Coordinator.  His defense is too simple allowing even rookie QBs to pick us apart.  No deception,  weak on blitzes.

The key when dealing with a rookie QB is to confuse him with complex coverages and key blitzes.  Jags just sat back with a vanilla defense hoping Winston would make a dumb mistake .. Jags made him look like a superstar

Quote:Bortles missed an open AR15 one time...  It happens... QBs sometimes miss their recievers...

The INT in the first half was on Gerhart...  I mentioned this in the game day thread, and I stand by it.  The whiff on the block caused the INT...

If you recorded the game, go back and watch it...   BB5 saw the rushing coming right into his face and made him hurry the throw, in addition, he had to adjust his motion as the rusher was coming right at him.  The whole this was predicated on the fact that BB5 expected Gerhart to at least provide some semblance of a block, which Gerhart didn't do...  The whole INT lies completely on Gerhart.

Now, at the end of the day, the INT will show up as a stat on BB5... But man, that whiff was terrible.  Also, it wasn't really the reason we lost that game...
Gerhart missed the block, and it certainly affected Blake. however, he also missed Robinson open coming open in the middle. He'll get better in time (hopefully) reading the field. That said, this is Bad Blake showing up again. Yes, even if he missed the read, he really shouldn't have thrown the ball. It was a tight window. If you had a perfect pocket where you can put everything you have on the throw (or if you're Vick in his prime who can flick the ball with his wrist and have it on a line), maybe you consider that throw.

Quite frankly, Blake has a gunslinger mentality but not the cannon to pull it off. He has a good enough arm when his mechanics are set, but he needs to realize that defenses in the NFL are much faster and he does not have an elite arm to make that throw when he's not set. This is almost similar to the throw he made last week to ARob...

Except ARob was on the near side of him and he didn't have a defender bearing down on him (blake)
For me its the defense and defensive gameplan this game. Martin is good but jesus telvin, cyp and armbrister all took turns taking terrible angles and generally seemed to be running into blocks not even looking for Martin.

House,Mccray, gratz, brown were all washed and folded today. They show zero ability to jump a route and our soft zone just backpedal while the WRs run in breaking routes gameplan doesnt help. Watch how our CBs always turn their hips inside and backpedal to the sidelines every snap. Teams have been running posts in the vacated spot all season.
Quote:You're right that this loss isn't on Bortles, but he was missing open guys again and locking on guys. You mentioned the int, another bad one was the failed td throw over the middle, while Robinson was standing alone in the right corner of the end zone. He also had some great players today like the scramble and buying time on the td to Yeldon. The not going through progressions thing though worries me a bit.

Robinson was so open I saw him make a sandwich. I saw him go through progressions plenty. He missed a few throws but was hardly the problem.
The defense was bad.  But, one of their best players, Poz, was out.  And he hasn't been out long so the replacement is understandably going through growing pains.  Armbrister is only going to get better, Poz is going to come back, and Marks will come back.  The defense won't suddenly become top 10, but it also is unlikely to be as bad as it was this week for the rest of the season.

The o-line play was bad.  But, this is their first week playing without Linder.  AJ Cann got his first start.  Parnell seemed lost at times, but that could be because he's not used to playing next to Cann.  And, in spite of that, we saw both Bortles and Yeldon make the best of that bad situation.

Corey Grant's drop on the pitch cost us the game.  But he was probably only in because Yeldon strained his groin.  Maybe Yeldon doesn't drop that pitch.

I think this team wins the game if Poz and Linder were both available.  I think they win if the pitchback to Grant play call was different.  The depth is not there.  The starters can win, but the backups can't, not yet.  This is a welcome change from two years ago when neither the starters nor the backups could win.  I am willing to give Dave more time to find depth.  Armbrister is an undrafted rookie, as is Grant.  It would be nice if they could win games, but we should not be surprised if they need more time.

I don't think Gus is doing a good job, however.  Best case scenario for me would be to fire Gus maybe after the London game, and see if Marrone does better as interim coach.  I would bet Marrone cleans up a lot of the stupid stuff we're seeing.  And, in that case, we can go into 2016 with Marrone as HC and most of this year's offensive staff still in place.

I am as upset as anyone at this point. But still, it DOES NOT make sense to hire a new Coach at this point. I really feel if the team sticks with that they have right now and tweak a few things the Jags will improve. I still think we are close. We have the youngest team in the NFL and we are going through growing pains. I believe in two years this team will be beastly. It takes experience and we just do not have that yet. IMHO...

Quote:This was a chance to avoid the cellar in the AFC South and seize the mythical State Championship by sweeping Miami and Tampa, a feat not achieved sine 1998.  We blew it again.

My thoughts...

1.  Bortles had two bad throws the whole game, one on an INT to the left sideline to Marcedes when Robinson was open over the middle.  The other on a second half overthrow where Robinson was open deep.  However, overall, Bortles had the best statistical game of his career throwing four TDs and only one INT.  There's lots of blame for this loss, but it doesn't fall on his shoulders.

I liked Bortles game yesterday.  He has a gun slinger mentality so he's going to make a few mistakes.  The key is they let him continue his game in the 2nd half versus going the conservative route.   Kind of amazing that our strength is now heading toward the QB/WRs positions.
Impression?

Better game from Blake and the offense with the same end result. I expect Bradley to fire Babich today. Then Bradley will be fired after London. Then we hire Hue Jackson in the off season.

Its the same scheme that the Seahawks run, and no one complains about their defense. The Falcons are running similar scheme now too, and their defense is improved.

The Seahawks have a good front four, and pro bowlers in their secondary. They can rush with their front four, cover with their LBs, and and the secondary can play run or pass.

The Falcons now have a pass rush and drafted a stud CB in Trufant.

Meanwhile, our front four can't rush, and our LBs can't cover. I still think the DBs are OK, but their jobs are being made more difficult from the inadequacies of the front 7

Its a simplistic scheme, yes, but its supposed to allow players to play fast AND smart. So far, our guys are just playing fast but not smart resulting in bad angles.
Quote:He missed Robinson twice on deep passes.

Those are low percentage throws.

He would have had an insane day had he hit those two passes.

As it is, he had a good game despite no help from the defense, running game, or offensive line.

I didn't think the first long incomplete to ARob as a miss on Bortles' part.It appeared to me that ARob miss played the ball, attempting to dive to early rather than run under it. I thought it was a great throw.
The Offense came to play other than not establish a run game. I liked the plays for the most part other than the toss back to Grant. I dotn like plays that begin negative to begin with.

Bortles used all the tools he had to move the ball and not relying on a single player.

AR15 was open deep a couple of times and #5 threw short or into coverage, issue can be fixed

The D and ST was a big disappointment. If missing 1 player (Poz) gives up that much of a run game. There is LB depth issues.

Im not a fan of only rushing 4 send 5+ to get the job done.

Im indifferent on the coaching staff as of now. Seen pros and cons but yesterday's game was on the D.

The time management didnt bother me too much at the end of the 4th qtr, maybe could have used the TOs a bit earlier to save some time but the Jags made the TD to be only down by 1 score and had a good on-side attempt.

Turnovers again for the 2nd week in a row gave points to the opposing team. ...again hated the toss back to 3rd string Grant with bad field position ...directly led to a Bucs TD

My impression is that every week we fix one problem (RZ Offense) and two more crop up (ST, Run Defense)
