Can someone explain the reasons for this dramatic downfall? I'm honestly just baffled…how does he go from Mr. Reliable for us to all of a sudden missing everything? The weather isn't that bad up there yet is it?
Does anyone have a reason for what's going on with him? I'm just so curious?
Simply said, kickers tend to go off sometimes. It's hard to explain but in the same way a good QB might throw multiple picks in a single game (Kaepernick being the most recent example) kickers occasionally suffer a drop in performance. He might be able to get himself back to the required level but when you miss two field goals in a game as well as being spotty in the other games then you tend not to get a second chance.
Miss a few and all of a sudden, those uprights look 3 feet wide. Soon you are just hoping your misses aren't "that bad". Before you know it, you are just praying you don't shank it off your foot.
Your mind is jumbled, you watch videos of yourself back when you were reliable and try to recreate that feeling again and it just isn't there. You realize you are past your prime and will likely never get it back.
This happens to professional golfers all the time. It's called the yips.
Thanks guys, makes a little more sense. Do you think it's from nerves of moving to a new team or would he have had the same result with the same kicks with us?

I think this is the case with Scobee also.
As DF mentioned, a QB may go through this type of slump.
Pro Golfers getting the "yips" is another good one.
Or in basketball, I've heard pro guys talk about shooting in a similar way. Sometimes, when everything seems to be going in, the basket seems like it's as big as a backyard pool. When they go through shooting slumps, it seems the basket is very small and almost has a lid on it.
Scobee most likely is going through this. But, as has been pointed out, kickers rarely get the time for second chances.
Kickers are not exempt from aging. It's science.

I will tell you what happened. he was unexpectedly yanked out of beautiful N.E. Florida and stuffed into the bunghole that is known as Pittsburgh. He's gonna get his nearly 4 million no matter what and he could give a damn. Probably tanking hoping to get canned so he can get back to golfing. Can't say that I would blame him. Glad he is not here missing all those kicks.
steelers are bringing in two kickers for try outs
i don't think he's declining as bad as some of you think, he's just missing his confidence. He's only early 30's.. thats not old for a kicker at all. He'll be fine with thime
I don't know where his struggles have been but Hinz Field in Pittsburgh is a notoriously difficult place to kick.
Nerves. Or he's just depressed that he can't play golf up in Pitt past the month of Oct
It's all part of Dave's and Scobee's master plan to bring him back here at a reduced salary after he get's cut by the Steelers. The Steelers would be on the hook for the near $4mil this year, Scobee gets to double dip though he wouldn't get much more than league minimum now and he'd be ok with that coming back to Jacksonville and Dave stole a 6th rounder from the Steelers in the process.
I mean that would be rich if it happened.

Wrong in order to get the 6th rounder for trade Jags had to agree to split his gauranteed salary for 2015

I thought I read the Jags only had to cover like 900 grand of the 3.5 million. I'll see if I can find it.

Not dramatic last year he was not good either hit on 77% of his kicks and was in the bottom of kickers in the league last year we were lucky to get the 6th for him and that was only because of his accuracy previously

Not that their website is official compared to actual contract but that is where I got my info

During the 2007-2008 playoff game, I was worried that he might miss the game winning field goal. Steeler's fans have to hold their breath every-time someone comes up for a kick now.
He had a comfort zone in Jax and really wasn't challenged for many years. The trade was a shakeup that got him out of that zone. Plus, he sucked last year.

20 out of 26 with 3 blocked kicks is hardly sucking. Take out those blocks and he's at 87%.
