I'm in favor of keeping Sterling above Walters. My personal opinion is that Sterling has more upside. He only played one game this preaseason but looked solid. He's another large target for Bortles, that runs good routes with great hands.
I agree with going with the bigger, more upside guy.
However, I get the feeling they'll go with Walters because of the "trust" factor.
I get it, but don't necessarily agree with it. Reliability is nice, knowing what you have is nice... but I'd rather go green with the guy with more promise in this case.
As a 5th receiver, you will likely not make a huge impact.
I would rather go with sterling who has a bigger upside physically than Walters, but that's just me.
They need to find a way to keep Sterling with the rash of small injuries that keep happening with our WR corp. Also, The 5th WR spot is the position where you want a trusted veteran (in a perfect world) to provide quality depth. The 4th spot is usually reserved for rookies and development projects as well as the PS.
IMO, Thats the question that Caldwell is trying to answer right now. "How do we keep Sterling?". Hiding a spot on IR isn't going to work this go around.
Edit: Also, The smart play could be simply stashing another rookie who hasn't shown crap (Koyack) to open up another spot on the roster.
Sterling does have plenty of upside, but let him reach it on the PS and then activate him down the road when injuries occur at WR or TE.

If Lee doesn't play next week, the 5th receiver might have to.
Do you want the guy with some experience or the one injured during all of training camp and only able to play the last preseason game?

Thats the tricky part. I don't think this kid makes it to the PS.
Sterling is raw enough that I doubt other teams would risk snagging him knowing they'd have to activate him for three weeks.

I was thinking the same thing. I have not been overly impressed with Koyak. I would rather have Sterling take his spot at TE, if nothing else.

Why not? He lasted until the 7th round and has only played one preseason game.

I think a team like Carolina would snatch him up. They lost Kelvin Benjamin for the season, and beyond him their wide receivers were pretty weak.

I'm guessing Carolina would be looking for an established veteran to replace Benjamin.

Do you realize how many receivers are going to be released or are already sitting at home that could help them alot more than a project like Sterling?

Not a whole lot of them with Sterling's upside.

Agreed. I can't really see a team adding him to an active roster.
He was a raw seventh round pick who barely played in the preseason, teams aren't go to be falling over themselves to claim him. He should easily stick on the practice squad to start the season.
Letting Sterling go is a risk, but I think Walters has been reliable. That's something we've been missing with our receivers and we would be stupid to let that go. Sterling has a huge ceiling and could be great, but Walters has shown more. We have Hurns, ARob, and Lee for starters, but what if someone goes down? That's when Walters can be very useful.

I think you may be overselling his upside or at least the likelihood of him reaching it.

Can't forget that Walters also has added value as a special teamer. He'll likely be the backup punt returner to Greene and I think he's played as a gunner before in Seattle.

I think while he has some upside he would almost bring them nothing now. And all anybody has seen of him is a fourth preseason game.
Walters is too reliable to give up.
Could we take six WRs though ?
It might mean cutting someone like Pierce, but if they really like both players then they could do it.
