Quote:That's not exactly by design, it's more an admission that the team hasn't been able to find its Earl Thomas in the deep third.

This......said about 28 teams (or more)
I think we try him at SS if Cyprien struggles or goes down with injury. We are thin there with Loston being out, who I thought looked like a liability most of the time. I know we drafted him to be a FS but Sergio has looked solid this Preseason. Maybe the initial intention was to bring him along and replace him soon but we have been missing a solid SS for a long time.

I never bought that he was going to be our FS. I always knew he would end up replacing Cyprien and I bet that's what will happen. Get Jalen Ramsey if we don't go for Myles Jack or Jaylon Smith and we're set.

I think naming Sample the FS is veiled confidence in Cyprien. They knew they were going to give Cyp another year and they also know FS was a liability for us so they said that he would play FS. I wouldn't be shocked if he is our starting SS in a few years.

Yep.

The only thing I would change is I wouldn't be shocked if he is our starting SS this year.
He will be our starting SS by the end of this year book it. As soon as they drafted him I knew this would be the outcome. He is bigger, faster, with better coverage skills, instincts, and tackling ability than Cyprien. Cyprien will continue to take bad angles and look average at best, eventually he will get hurt and be out for a game or two and Sample will be put in and he will not relinquish the job.

Quote:Can someone give me an honest evaluation of Sample tonight? I wasn't able to watch... From what I read, he tackles well and looks physically imposing out there. Thanks..

Your best evaluation would be to listen to Bradley's post-game speech. You could see Sample often in position to support the CBs but it was tough to get much more of a read on him from what the tv coverage showed.

Quote:You have to play the cards you are dealt my man. An Earl Thomas type FS comes around once every 7 years or so.

Thanks again Gene!

This
Sample is better than Evans, TBD if he's a better FS than Sergio
Sample looks like he's going to be very good.

As far as cuts go, the Loston injury probably helps Evans in the numbers game.  Otherwise, I don't expect Evans to be around much longer.

I don't think Loston showed much of anything. I think Evans would have made it over him anyway.

Loston had been awful.

He was last week vs the Lions, but he looked pretty good vs the Giants. It's also just a slight ankle sprain. That said I'm leaning toward Evans now simply due to the hits he was laying on receivers yesterday. It's close though and I could easily be swayed either way. It's not like Evans is any good in coverage either.

Evans is decent as a SS. Makes the tackles he's supposed to make. Nothing extraordinary, but neither is Cyp if we're being honest

wut?

I completely agree. He was terrible.

Err... Loston looked pretty good two weeks ago vs the Giants.

I'll edit the post.

Impressed by sample and his aggression. He is built like a SS and is likely a better fit there but with them giving cyp another chance they will give him a chance at FS.

Evans,Loston, and Brown havent done much. They may even start Sample at SS and see if cyp fares better as a single high safety.
What really impresses about Sample is the way he plays sideline to sideline.  Valuable player moving forward.
