So the guys listed as not playing all look like virtual roster locks...except CB Peyton Thompson. Is that a sign that he's won the fifth corner job, maybe?

 

Or could it have just been a typo. Demetrius McCray is not listed as having sat the game out, and it seems odd that every other starter would sit it out while he played.

Peyton Thompson missed the game with a hamstring injury. McCray played a little simply because the Jaguars were tapped out at CB. I'm still not convinced that Josh Evans and Rashaad Reynolds are all good in coverage, but I do think they both made the roster as the last two dbs.


 

Evans situation may depend on Loston's injury status, but he was making some nice hits tonight and was solid tacking his guy if nothing else.
Reynolds is a ST standout and finished the game with six tackles.


 

Meanwhile, Marshall has only proven that he needs a lot, and I mean a whole lot, of work before he's anywhere near ready and I'm no longer even worried that someone might claim him off the PS. Harris I just keep seeing getting beat all preseason, and I just don't think he's got it.


 

At LB I was really impressed with Armbrister and Lotulelei, but there looks to be only two OLB spots left between them and LaRoy Reynolds who was out with a knee injury. Do we put LaRoy on IR and keep these two? Or put one of the three on the PS, and if so which one? I'd imagine they would keep LaRoy and Armbrister with Lotulelei qualifying under the new rule that you can keep two PS players with two accrued seasons.


 

On the DL I'm very curious about Ziggy Hood's injury status. As I mentioned at the start of this thread, I've been thinking they need to make a choice between Ziggy and standout OG Tyler Shatley for the final roster spot assumign they hang onto Branch. Now, however, it appears that Neal Sterling has entered the mix. I still think Bryan Walters has secured the #5 WR position, and even more so with his performance today, but Sterling looks like he'd be a great #6 WR or #5 TE behind Nic Jacobs. So presuming they end up with two spots remaining between Hood, Branch, Shatley and Sterling, which two do they keep?

I think Branch is gone, probably to IR then released after he recovers. 

 

Shatley is reportedly thought very highly of by the coaching staff, and even though Bowanko's around as an interior backup, I'm anticipating Bo spending most of his time in practice at tackle if the team only keeps Joeckel, Parnell and Pasztor outside. Given that, an extra interior backup is needed. Shatley sticks.

 

Sterling's future is, imo, tied to Corey Grant's. The Jaguars historically haven't kept six receivers under Bradley, but if the team feels like Grant will make it to the practice squad and they don't want to burn a roster spot on a kickoff returner, Sterling could stick as a sixth receiver, possibly an emergency tight end.

 

I keep going back and forth on Hood. On the one hand, he's competent veteran depth at a position where the Jaguars are missing their quality starter. On the other, Alualu and Bennett can fill that job until Marks returns, and keeping Hood means guaranteeing his salary. I'm leaning towards Hood sticking on the roster, if only because Alualu is also the primary backup at 5-tech as well, and a single injury to Alualu, Odrick or Bennett could thoroughly screw the Jags along the DL unless Hood is around.

 

So my two would be Shatley and Hood, with Sterling possible if Grant doesn't make the team.

Any chance the Jags add a corner and strong safety via waivers?


The depth at corner seems to be a concern as well as a #2 strong safety

This absolutely would not surprise me. I can bet Caldwell and/or a couple scouts are scouring the wire looking for possible replacements at the #5 CB spot and the #4 S spot.

For starters, with what Grant has put up on tape this preseason he absolutely will be claimed if he's waived. There's no doubt about it. But moreover, the Jaguars can use his speed on their roster for multiple reasons. He's made the roster so you can stop wondering "if."


 

I'd be perfectly fine if Branch were waived or even IR'd with or without a designation to return. From my perspective given the situation I mentioned here, I'd do one or the other. I'm just not sure if Caldwell is on the same page there. So I'm really looking at two spots between Hood, Shatley and Sterling, and much depends on Hood's injury status. If Hood goes on IR then it's an easier call to keep Shatley and Sterling. You make a good point that keeping Hood week one means guaranteeing his big salary, but I'd probably go ahead and hang onto him if his injury is minor while making a tough call on Shatley vs Sterling as to which one makes the team and which one goes to the PS. I can't even make that call as I type this.

Not knocking Shatley...


...but should the team keep four guards and two other linemen that can also play the position if needed?

Corner? We have 4 really good corners in Dmac, Colvin, House, and Gratz. You're not going to find many guys off waivers that's going to unseat those guys. That's plenty deep to me, IMO.

 

I personally think they need to keep Marshall, similar to how they did with Denard. Even though Denard had no position as a rookie, they saw his athleticism and kept him. It gives the team a year to evaluate and decide which position he needs to focus on the following year.

I think Marshall will be safe on the practice squad. I think he is too raw or someone to add to their active roster.

They can evaluate Marshall for the year just fine with him on the PS. The early evaluation is simple... he can't cover or tackle scrubs yet.

I still think Marshall will end up better suited as a FS than a strict corner

Considering he singlehandedly shut down Dez Bryant last season I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he isn't 100% healed from his knee injury. I don't even think he practiced all week.

Dez was pretty much blanked until after halftime when they moved him over to Gratz side.

It was one of the few games i did get to see. I guess it would've been smart to keep Mccray on him?
