I saw this on Big Cat Country and thought it would make for a good discussion. I think we should get both, but I doubt we'll attempt to get either of them.

Assuming Aldon is ready to play and isn't taking a break to get his life in order, I'd easily sign him up to a similar deal as Greg Hardy. He'd be worth the gamble on a deal like that since it's mainly per-game roster bonuses. Bruce Irvin is going to cost a decent draft pick and is a free agent after this season, so I'd pass on him.

Low risk, high reward
Only when Blackmon comes back

Low risk? Isn't Smith facing a 1 year ban now along with possible jail time?

And if he is suspended, we don't have to pay him nor does he take up a roster spot.

Low risk? Yes.
Nope. Next?
No
Aldon Smith and Justin Blackmon come back, Super Bowl bound.

Its been like 3 weeks and nobody has signed him. Seems odd for a guy with "low risk".

Well obviously they haven't been privy to the discussions here.

Hello, Alfie. How've you been?

Low risk? Yes.
How about taking a low risk shot on someone who might actually contribute this year vs filling out the "All Suspended Team"? Maybe we should call up Dion Jordan and trade for Josh Gordon while we're at it.

Just a thought.

I don't get it.

I'd contend that Aldon Smith is not low risk.

First off, just look at his rap sheet since entering the league.  The most recent incident is just another in a long string of incidents.  Are you thinking he's going to magically change his ways?  If so, why hasn't that already happened?  This isn't his first suspension.

No, he doesn't cost you a roster spot or eat up any cap space while he's serving out his suspension.  The risk comes when he is back on the roster.  He's a violation away from an indefinite suspension.  While this doesn't take up a roster spot or cap dollars, it does impact your team in a negative light if you're expecting him to be a contributor.  It also makes your front office look silly.  Haven't we had enough of that over the years?

Sorry, let problem children go where they're embraced.  No need to screw with the chemistry of a young team by bringing in someone like Smith.

As far as Bruce Irvin is concerned, it really depends on what it would take to trade for him.  I don't think he's worth what Seattle would no doubt expect in trade to give him up.  We're not going to offer them some late round pick and expect to land him.  If the Seahawks, who reportedly want to keep him in the fold, determine they can't extend his contract, he'll be a free agent.  The Jags will no doubt be a player in that sweepstakes because they'll have the money, and the connection to Gus Bradley to rely upon if they decide to pursue him.  It won't cost a single draft pick.
I think Aldon Smith has bigger priorities right now than football.

I saw this on BCC and it sounded like the author legitimately thought it might happen. Maybe someone knows something, but picking up either guy seems highly unlikely to me.

It's Alfie...come on.
I'm highly concerned with our defense. I expect our offense to put up some points, but our defense isn't getting any pressure and the secondary got lit up by Ben/Stafford and should've been lit up by Eli if he wasn't on a coldstreak. There's a reason why DFJ was the highest drafted non-QB this year.
