Coaches and GM's don't always hit on their decisions so
obviously they play to the player's strengths. What else can they do? Your spiel about Gerhart is all fine and dandy but when an undrafted guy like Zach Zenner comes into the game tonight just dragging guys into the endzone and shows the ability to run outside the tackles as well, you should look a bit intrigued when you're paying a guy 10.5 million dollars on a 3 year deal for a two yard average to essentially play the same role.
Sloby just became a member of my golf club. I imagine his rounds taking 5.5 hours, avoiding the open fairway at all costs. And hitting into the woods on purpose.

Running north and south is the most important attribute for a RB in the NFL. Running east and west in this league typically is a losing proposition.
Even the fastest RBs in the league learn they have to use that speed going north and south.

obviously didn't read the article about Gerhart and Fisch when Fisch indicated he was going to focus on running wide. Gerhart thought at the time 'uh-oh' as that was NOT his strength. Fisch ignored that, among many other mistakes, so your comment is flat out wrong in the very topic you are discussing. Zenner might be great, but the Jags (and every other team) have had their share of one-hit wonders, and your comparison of a player on another roster is inane unless you have a plan to pick him up and magically transport him to our 53. As far as salary issues; first, it is Kahn's money, not yours, and second, I trust Caldwell, Idzik, etc a hell of a lot more than you to manage our cap based on what they have done. If Gerhart can get a few first downs on short yardage and maybe another with a play-action pass every game or so, they might feel that is a bargain. Gerhart looks like he has finally found a place where he can be productive with an OC that understands how to use his strengths. Good enough for me.

Running wide being the focus or not does not change that Toby wasn't very productive as a power north/south runner between the tackles which is his acclaimed strength. Would you disagree with that?
And clearly it's not our money and not a immense hit on the team's budget but fans will wonder if it was money well spent or not, as they should. Right now the Gerhart experience seems to have been a gamble that hasn't paid off so far but we will see. I believe in the guy, myself. I do believe he played through a nagging injury last season so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
Just playing devil's advocate. I think Yeldon is our future and there are bigger problems to worry about than our RB situation. *coughLTcough*

Toby wasn't very productive when he was playing with a bum foot.
Towards the end of last season when his foot began to heal and so far this offseason, Toby has looked every bit the power north/south runner that people were expecting.
