Just curious, since old farts like me are new to this "rickrolled" thing.  Did I just "rickroll" you?

No, you just linked to the video. Rickrolling, in the original sense, involves slipping a link to "Never Gonna Give You Up" disguised as something else into a post. For example, if we were having a debate about the social policies of candidate X and I were to slip a link to the video in place of something that I'm citing as a source, that's a Rick Roll. Simply linking to the video doesn't cut it.

Outside of the Internet, Rickrolling involves unexpectedly playing or performing "Never Gonna Give You Up" in a place where there's zero context for it. For example, Cartoon Network famously Rickrolled the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade a few years back by having the characters on their float start to sing something else, then they abruptly stopped and Rick Astley emerged to mime his song for a national audience of millions. Most of them did not know what a Rick Roll was, so they were left confused and utterly trolled.

In the Westboro sense, the Foos are certainly not the first to Rickroll them. Playing NGGYU at exceedingly loud volumes to mask out the noise of WBC protesters, neo-Nazis, (insert group you disagree with here), whatever has been around for years.

The key to a successful Rick Roll is not overdoing it. For a couple of years there, I couldn't click a damn link without being sent back to that video. Now that the craze has largely passed and there isn't a new video on Youtube every hour of someone Rickrolling a gathering and acting like they're the first to ever come up with it, the occasional Rick Roll is a fun and welcome intrusion into serious conversation.

I never knew that "rickrolling" was that important that there are actually "rules" regarding it.

Sit back and think about that for a bit.

Rickrolling is an under-appreciated art form. It was stained for years by those who simply emulated it and saturated the market with cheap imitations, but those of us who remain, the true geniuses of Rickrolling, can make almost any Internet post into a masterpiece.
I really fear for our future.

You haven't even asked me about the storied history and evolution of the Rick Roll over time. Tongue

Some thing's are just about having fun...it's not the end of society as we know it!
Quote:I'll just leave this here.
Lol. You have no idea how much I needed this LMBO moment. It's been a rough day.

I've been almost rickrolled!!  :thanks:

I say 'almost' per the definition described in detail above.

So is JIB's still being a part of this board an official revocation of the old "insta-ban" policy?  :whistling:

I guess the insta-ban came after I left. I remember it used to irritate the mess out of people.

RJ/CB mentioned that that's why they banned it Wink

Wish I still had that PM.

I'll try harder next time.     Who says that old dogs can't learn new tricks?

Just remember though, if you are having a bad day, there's always this (not Rick Astley  :yucky: ).

Hahahaha. I used to watch them when I was stationed at Fort Sam Houston. Saturday mornings when most people were hung over we'd all go to the Hacienda on post (a recreational facility) and lay on the couches and watch this while drinking pots of coffee. Lol. Thankfully I never had a hangover. I was young and crazy but not quite stupid. At least not that kind of stupid. ;-)

I hope that it lifted your spirits and made your day a little bit better.   Smile
Time to make you two feel old: I was but a wee sprout when Ren & Stimpy was on, but it was still my favorite show and, thanks to my dad's sick sense of humor, I got it. All of it.

You child.

I applaud the effort you put into explain, with examples, a rickroll to someone.

As I've said, it's an art form.

It did, thanks!
