As someone who is new to college football, there's something which confuses me (actually, there are a lot of things that confuse me - but this is a start)... And I bet someone on this forum knows the answer !
Why do some college teams sell replica jerseys with players names on them, while others will only sell ones with numbers and some (like the Gators) only sell jerseys with a number one on the back ?
I'm guessing this is all to do with rules about players making money from the college game, but the inconsistency is a bit odd !
I am pretty sure they can only sell replicas with names on the back of former players.

Yeah, no current players can have their jersey sold with their name on the back of it. Going further, a lot of people think its wrong for colleges to put current players numbers on the back of jerseys because they are making money off an amateur without compensating the player even after they leave the school/graduate.
they used to only put the number of whatever year it was. so for 2015 the team jerseys will just be 15, no name.

Number 1 for a lot of teams is the number given to the best player outside of QB

Not true. The #15 this year is nationally being recognized for the contributions of Tim Tebow.

Best player
outside of the QB, RB, TE, LB, OL, DL positions.
Essentially, the #1 is only given to a WR, DB, Safety, Kicker or Punter.

The year number is used in advertising to indicate they are selling the latest version of the jersey.
