Full Version: If Gus fails this year

Is there anyone in particular you'd want to become our head coach next year?

Gus gets another year because the current roster is way below average w/ regard to the talent level and experience compared to other teams.  We have potential but should see more significant progress next year.

That said, let me respond to your question ----- IF GUS GOES ...... might as well got the Coach In Waiting ..... Doug Marrone.

If the field is open ..... go get Jimbo or Brian Kelly.  I think both are going to be burned out with the college scene soon (e.g. academic requirements and policing kids)

I expect 5 -6 wins.

. I think that's a reasonable expectation. Going 4-12 again or worse. should get him fired. I love Gus, but I still question whether he's the right guy. Nothing he has done has really convinced me he is.

And to be clear, I'm not expecting playoffs this season. Bortles third year is when I expect us to make a push for the AFC south. This year I expect us to be competitive in every single game. If the blowouts keep happening...
If we start out like last years team he will be let go then.We we're getting blown out every game the first half of last year.If that happens again Caldwell job will be in jeopardy. He will have no other option.

The team struggled last year because of youth.  Those young players now have a season under their belt and the experience that goes along with it.  Everyone knew it would be ugly to start because of so many rookies in starting roles.  I think Gus could put a folding chair on the sideline and watch Tony Robbins videos during the games and the team will still be more effective this year based on the upgrades that have been made, and the experience that has been gained by the players from last season.

That being said, if the team struggles early, and it's as ugly as we've seen previously, I still don't think you'll see any changes.  How the team ends the season will matter more.  I don't think Caldwell or Bradley's seats are even remotely warm at this point.  Any changes to that won't impact Caldwell.

At some point you have to stop making this excuse. Yes, we are less experienced than some other teams but coaching has an impact on the record each year. Personally, I'm tired of hearing that we just didn't have the talent and experience to compete with other teams every year. We have significantly improved our roster this year, and if our coaching isn't on par, then Gus needs to go.
If we start out 0-8 then he gets fired before the end of the season.

Look at his record since he took over.

His biggest issue to date is half time adjustments. I can still feel the effects of the Eagles plowing us in the 2nd half of week 1 last year.
I dont think we will be in search of a new HC but I also dont believe we will win 8+ games. I just hope the team improves and we no longer get blown out.

I don't think Gus will fail this year either, but (since the question was asked) I'd say Pep Hamilton would be someone I'd like to see interviewed.  Someone from the offensive side of the ball in any case.

If he starts off 0-4 he's gone IMO. 0-8 should not be the standard.

I strongly doubt that Caldwell or Khan would essentially scrap the season so quickly. If the Jaguars are a hopelessly lost cause and sitting at 1-6 or 0-7 at the bye, it's possible that Caldwell could send Bradley a text saying that the flight home from London is delayed by a couple hours--then leave without him. It would take a monumental collapse to get Bradley fired during the season, in large part because whoever gets the interim job would almost certainly not be the long-term replacement.

If Bradley is fired, I certainly hope Caldwell has enough sense to not make Doug Marrone, the man who proved nothing before being paid $4M to quit, the permanent head coach. I still don't think Bradley loses his job this season, though. I think that a competitive 6-10 where we're in all of our games to the end is all it would take to keep him around. I also think the team is good enough to hit 6-10 in its sleep at this point, and that the Jaguars will claw their way to 7-9, maybe even 8-8.
Halftime adjustments. Lol

I don't know if it's a matter of him not making halftime adjustments.

He hasn't had talent.

If he goes up against a more talented team, no matter what he does in terms of halftime adjustments, more often than not, it won't work well enough to produce many wins.

The Eagles game you referenced is a classic example.

The team played well enough (or the Eagles poorly enough) to get a nice lead at halftime.

But the Eagles made adjustments at halftime after seeing the talent on the Jaguars first hand.

The Jaguars would have been foolish to go away from what worked so well for them in the first half.  When the Jaguars couldn't counter the adjustments-game over.

Thing is, if the Jaguars had managed to cobble together even an average running attack, that game could have turned out much differently.  But they weren't able to run the ball due to deficiencies at RB and the OL.  They weren't able to hold the ball and milk the clock, and they wound up losing.
