Quote:I feel pretty much the same. The timing of his release is also a little odd since camp is so close.
Ehh...they don't really need him, and they felt like he hasn't contributed like they wanted him too.  When you don't perform, well this is what happens.  No surprise here.
I'm hoping he was released to find a new home before training camp starts.

More so I think he's gotten into trouble again.

A little birdie told me that cutting Ace Sanders frees up a roster spot and practice reps and cutting Blackmon lets him out of his contract for no benifit to them whatsoever.  They may as well cut Mickey Mouse.
I just find it ironic, if that's the right word, because a few days ago I answered a thread in FB about what player you'd cut from your team if you had to cut one right now, and I answered "Ace Sanders."

They can't cut him because he's not on the roster. He's on the suspended list, and as long as he's there, he doesn't count against roster limits, he doesn't count against the salary cap and he can't be traded or released.
Is there any way we can dig into this or is the team not a liberty to say? Im genuinely curious what got him cut at this particular time. I fully expected him to be among the final cuts but not before having a chance.

Just considering the way Gus praised him this offseason, it seemed like they were going to let him at least compete in camp.

That's not ironic, that's what happened! Wink
I agree with Ronster and a few others on here who think Ace simply didn't figure into their plans and cut him now to give him an opportunity to catch on elsewhere before TC starts. Who knows, maybe it's another drug issue but I just think they chose to move on from a player who isn't producing the way they'd hoped. It's a good sign that the roster is stronger now than it was two years ago and we'll begin to see decent players cut rather than the scrubs you normally see.
The writing was on the wall with Ace....they just pulled the trigger a little sooner.

I was a bit surprised to see two camps.

Cut him prior to another drug suspension.

Cut him to give him a shot elsewhere.

I was in the latter camp, and gave no thought to the former before hearing that idea here.

So, were all the positives they spoke of him in OTAs for the purpose of helping him catch on somewhere else, or was it improvement erased by another infraction?

So it was entirely your fault.

Being cut after the camp hype make me think it's the latter. You don't just talk up a player who's not good enough to make your roster just to get him a job elsewhere.

I've actually seen/heard dozens of instances of coaches talking up players they knew they may cut.  Pete Carroll must have done it a half dozen times in the past two years alone.

When there's enough talent at one position group to demand cutting a decent player - coaches will definitely "lobby" for their potential cuts to get jobs elsewhere if they respect the player.

Still  -  my initial reaction to this was "I wonder if he screwed up again?"

I'm the exact opposite. I just assumed he'd gotten into trouble with the league office again and was sent on his way, but the emergence of the second theory (and lack of any news from the league office on Ace) makes me wonder if it's option two. They do have a bunch of potential punt returners on the roster, and several players who offer more potential at receiver than Ace does. Oh, and they drafted a guy in the fifth round who is basically a bigger Ace clone.
Maybe they were talking him up to see if they could get a 6th round pick for him. No one was biting so they cut bait.

Could be the case. My first thought was the same as others here, probably failed another drug test. If it was the drug test we'll know soon one way or another. If no team even kicks the tires on him I'd say that's a pretty good indication that he's got a year suspension looming, and if he does get a shot with a team we'll know for sure that he didn't have another infraction and was simply let go because he's not worth a roster spot less than two weeks from training camp.

The talent levels are vastly different.  Plus, it's not costing this team a penny to keep Blackmon around at this point.

BTW, I think next week is going to be a pivotal one for Blackmon.  We should start to hear some noise about him applying for reinstatement.

Probably failed another drug test.
question jags02 say blackmon returns gets in shape in a week..

what will the wr look like with him there and ace sanders now gone??.. thanx..
