Full Version: One Play Questions
You're currently viewing a stripped down version of our content. View the full version with proper formatting.
These questions will require you to access your Jaguars memory banks, video vaults, etc. I now these questions will tend to exclude, for want of better phrasing, the new fans, in part because this team hasn't been particularly good over the past few years, so for them the memories would be scant for two reasons. To you guys and gals, all I can say is welcome aboard and hold on. I think this team is about to improve greatly.

Now to the questions.

1. If you could change one play in Jaguars history, which one would it be? Mine would be the muffed punt by Reggie Barlow right before halftime of the AFC Championship game. Before that play, the Jaguars had the momentum. There was the possibility the team could have gone up by two scores by halftime. But he muffed the punt, giving them the momentum going into halftime.

2. Name one play, good or bad, that encapsulates the rivalries with:

A. The Colts-My choice is FT running over Mike Doss to beat the Colts

B. The Tacks...???

C. The Texans....???

D. The Steelers-Chris Hudson running back the blocked FG at the end of the first MNF game

3. What is your one favorite play in Jaguars history? Maybe Brunell's run against Denver

4. Name your one favorite play from the following players:

A. Fred Taylor-His game winning 71 yard TD against Tampa Bay, 1998

B. Jimmy Smith-The fade from Brunell

C. Mark Brunell-Brunell's scramble against Denver

D. MJD-

E. Other

5. The most amazing play in Jaguars history-good or bad. My pick: The River City Relay against New Orleans.

1. The Barlow muff is a good choice. If the Jagaurs win that game they probably win the Superbowl and Coughlin might still be here now. Aside from that I'd change the last game of the 2011 season allowing the colts to win and depriving them of Andrew Luck. I know there might not be one play to point out for it, but just that change in the draft order would realistically put the Jaguars in contention to win the division this season and every season looking into the next decade. Thanks to that useless win the Jaguars get to deal with Andrew Luck for the next 10+ years.

Oh, after some thought it also occurred to me that maybe getting holding called on that long run in the 07 playoffs by Garrard might be good, too. If that happens then Garrard probably doesn't get a big contract because he's thought of as the guy that couldn't hold a big lead and disintegrated throwing INTs, Shack probably doesn't trade away the whole '08 draft chasing the pass rush dragon, and the Jaguars probably would have gotten through their 7 season funk already.

2. In addition to the run over Mike Doss the other colts rivalry play I can think of would be the 375 game when Mojo had a colt hanging off of him swing around him and go flying off of him on the way to a TD. https://youtu.be/MmQAYpeU0Hk?t=1m1s

The Tacks rivalry play doesn't exist for me. Until the Jaguars do something sufficiently painful to them to make up for 99' then we still owe them a big one. Destroying the shoulder of their QB on a sack if they ever get a real blue chip prospect would probably be about what it would take to pay them back properly.

The most memorable play against the texans to me is when Jacoby Jones dropped the ball on his way into the end zone because he was celebrating early and it ended up a touchback for the Jaguars. I think that play pretty well encapsulates the texans and the entirety of their fanbase in general. Unwarranted celebration when they really have little to celebrate.

The steelers rivaly play choice of the blocked FG return for the steelers stands alone. Iconic play.

3. Favorite play was probably Means' first TD against the Bills in the 96 playoffs when he bounced off the pile and ran as hard as he could to get the TD. That was the moment I knew the Jaguars really had a chance.

4. Taylor's best play was against the Dolphins in the 99 playoffs when he took a screen pass and juked out or ran over pretty much every player on the dolphins defense for a TD.

Jimmy Smith's best play was catching the hail mary TD at the end of the half against the Patriots in 96 after it bounced off McCardell. Jaguars lost the game, but that was a memorable play from a guy who wasn't really known at that point.

Brunell's most memorable play was throwing the INT at the end of the first titans game in 99. That was pretty much how I remember him now, a guy that played some good games, but always came up short against the tacks.

MJD's most memorable play was above when he threw off the defender on his back against the colts.

5. That river city relay was awesome, especially the color guy's shriek of horror after the extra point miss. I'll never forget that.

I couldn't think of a memorable play against the Texans when I first made the post, but I have to say the Hail Mary to Mike Thomas would qualify as memorable. As I type now, I still don't know if that is the one play that sufficiently encapsulates the rivalry between the teams, but to me it is certainly the most memorable. THE Pro Football Hall of Fame does, too, because they have Thomas' gloves on display. That represents one of the few times in NFL history a game was decided on a Hail Mary.

If I had to pick a play that encapsulates the rivalry with the Tacks...and it sickens me to type this....it was the McNair scramble in the title game. For some reason, Haynesworth's body slam of MJD also leaps to mind.

MJD had so many exciting plays, it is difficult for me to name a favorite of his. The block on Merriman stands out to me, but I think my favorite of his was his kickoff return against the Colts in the 375 yard game.

The River City Relay had two improbable aspects of it. First, the play itself was just like the legendary end of the Cal-Stanford game of 1982. You knew what they had to do to have a shot to win, you knew they would try it, but sitting in the stands watching them pull it off was unbelievable. But to have them follow that up by missing the extra point defied explanation.

Yeah, the hail Mary catch was memorable at the time, but thanks to the season it occurred in and the player that made the catch it's hard for it to stick out. The Jaguars ended up doing nothing, losing out and going for 8-5 to 8-8 and missing the playoffs because the team just didn't have a QB that could actually win games. Even a hobbled Manning on a bad team was good enough to stick it to the Jaguars at the end of that season.

The tacks, the only plays I can recall against them are bad ones or ones that really weren't consequential. I recall Taylor's run that put him over 10000 yards, but it wasn't a special play, and while there were some years that the Jaguars were beating the tacks, all of the memorable plays against them are bad, and I don't want to think of the tacks really at all. I just feel hatred when I do.

I am going to take another approach. Even though we were not in the game, I am going to state that the one play I would like changed in NFL history is the Music City Miracle aka "The Forward Lateral" lol.
B. The Tacks- Barlow's muff in '99 AFC Championship game.

C. The Texans- Hard choice since this is the newest rivalry. Maybe Blackmon's 81 yard TD between 3 Texans defenders.

D. The Steelers- Rashean Mathis PIck 6 in overtime off Tommy Maddox.

B. Jimmy Smith- Hard to pick one of Jimmy's 3 TD's in route to 291 yards against Baltimore in 2000.

C. Mark Brunell- Brunell's scramble against Denver.

E. Other - Darius clothesline on Robert Ferguson.

5. The most amazing play in Jaguars history-good or bad. - Brackens' strip sack and recovery off Marino for a TD. I was a huge Brackens fan.

A novel approach to question 1. I like it. One question though. I think if you take that play away, we end up playing Buffalo (?) in the divisional game-and I think we win that game, but play Indy at home.

Do you think we beat Indy?

Defensively I don't think they give us any issues at all. I just wonder if we could slow Manning and company enough to win.

I would have chosen Mathis against the Steelers in the "other" category, but probably against Big Ben and not Maddox.

Darius would have been a second "other" pick, but I would have listed his hit against Brady or Bettis.

A second choice for me for "amazing play" would of course be Morten's miss.

What was it with Brunell and all of those middle left side of the back end line end zone picks?!? UGH!

I wish TC would have taken that playcall out of the playbook.
One of my favorites was the Clyde INT.
Quote:One of my favorites was the Clyde INT.
A favorite of mine too.

If I had a question for "most underrated play" that would certainly warrant consideration.

That INT turned that Buffalo wild card game around.

I think we do think we beat Indy. I mean we beat EVERY SINGLE opponent that year except for the Titans. Didn't we have the top rated defense that year? 3 guys with 10 plus sacks. I think we would have rattled Manning in his second year.
My version...
Quote:1. If you could change one play in Jaguars history, which one would it be? To switch it up, I'll go with the Dennis Northcut drop. It he catches that pass, I truly believe it would have been a different game, especially down the stretch.

2. Name one play, good or bad, that encapsulates the rivalries with:

A. The Colts-Both of Blaine's rookie season victories. We beat them when it doesn't matter.

B. The Tacks-The Pac Man Jones game.

C. The Texans-David Carr's last second goal line td dive.

D. The Steelers-Fred trucking Polamalu in mid air while picking up a crucial 1st down during the 9-0 MNF game. Always a battle vs the Steelers.

3. What is your one favorite play in Jaguars history? Natrone Means 30yd td run vs in the playoffs vs Bills.

4. Name your one favorite play from the following players:

A. Fred Taylor-His 234 yds rush @ Steelers in 2000

B. Jimmy Smith-His fly routes vs anybody

C. Mark Brunell-His scramble against Denver in 96

D. MJD-Downing the ball on the 1 yd line vs the Jets in 09

E. Other-Fred's 3rd career game. 32 touches. 180 yds from scrimmage.

5. The most amazing play in Jaguars history-good or bad. Tim Couch's Hail Mary. If that doesn't happen, maybe Coughlin sticks around and rights the ship and Del Rio never happens. Maybe.

It's either that one or the Willie Clay interception in the AFC Title game in '96. While the '99 team had the talent, that '96 team was riding some serious momentum and without that play, maybe they keep that train a-rollin' through the Super Bowl.

2. Name one play, good or bad, that encapsulates the rivalries with:

A. The Colts-My choice is FT running over Mike Doss to beat the Colts How about that PI call against us in '04 (?) at home. Just infuriated me how Manning seemingly always got a PI call whenever he needed it, and that was a classic example. If I wanted the positive route though, it was that Fred play. Just an amazing cap to that game.

B. The Tacks...??? Fred's touchdown run in Tennessee in '04. That was the end of a long drive that really showed that the team was not going to be pushed around by the "Tough Guy" tacks any more. One thing about Del Rio, he knew how to play against Fisher.

C. The Texans....??? The entire Henne game where he threw for what seemed like 500 yards and still lost. Houston is just a thorn in the side and they seem to be a real tough out for us.

D. The Steelers-Chris Hudson running back the blocked FG at the end of the first MNF game Fred's TD run towards the end of the "234" game. I've written this before, but he had no business playing like that at that point of that season. The team was done. The season was done. They were just playing out the string then Fred decided that he was going to play out of his mind that entire game. Then he rattles off a 26 yard TD run that turned Three Rivers into a mausoleum. Just an unreal moment.

3. What is your one favorite play in Jaguars history? Maybe Brunell's run against Denver I remember how I felt when Jimmy caught that TD that same game in Denver. While there was still game left, it was a sign that the team was legitimate and they weren't there to just get handled. They were ahead, way more ahead than anyone ever expected them to be.

4. Name your one favorite play from the following players:

A. Fred Taylor-His game winning 71 yard TD against Tampa Bay, 1998

B. Jimmy Smith-The fade from Brunell

C. Mark Brunell-Brunell's scramble against Denver

D. MJD-

E. Other - Garrard's scramble in Pittsburgh. It just set everything up. The team had stormed out to a monster lead and then Ben did Ben things and clawed them back in the game and had pulled ahead. Everyone knew that the Pitt Defense was going into Lock Down Mode and it's a pain to beat a team twice in a year anyway, much less twice at their place.

5. The most amazing play in Jaguars history-good or bad. My pick: The River City Relay against New Orleans. An absolutely jaw-dropping series of events.
MJD is a tie.

The block on Merriman VS SD

and the run against the Pats where he hit his own Oline guy, fell down, got up and ran for a big gain, possibly a TD, iirc.

If I had to pick another Steelers' play, it would be from that 234 yard FT game in 2000. Boselli was just coming back from the torn ACL. I still remember ESPN color analyst Paul McGuire saying it now "Tony Boselli just collapsed the entire right side of the Steelers' defensive line."

They showed the replay and he did.

Maybe.
I don't know if I can pick a favorite win from the Steelers' rivalry, but I have to think that 9-0 is near the top, if not at the very top.

If there was another single "team" play, it was a 2003 game against Tampa, celebrating the ten year anniversary since the awarding of the team. Tampa ran the ball to the right, and literally TEN (10) Jaguars were in on the tackle. To me, that sort of determination to hustle to the football and stop the run as a team represents a football ideal.
