Quote:One question that jumps out for me is why did the Vikings release Taylor Mays so soon after they signed him? Especially, considering that Mike Zimmer was his Defensive Coordinator for multiple seasons in Cincinnati?
Yup. That's a good question/concern.
I have no idea why they would do that, but it doesn't look good.
I remember him on the Hard Knocks show and he was kinda crazy. He looks like a beast safety just never put it all together. Lions have been able to turn some bad DBs into decent starters(Houston and Carey) and maybe Mays is the the next?

Before foot related injuries derailed Chris Houston's career with the Lions, I think he at least fit the category you mentioned. I think it would have even been fair to say he was an above average starter for a good portion of his stay with the Lions. Several weeks ago, Chris Houston signed a contract with the Carolina Panthers. I hope he can get his career back on track but it wouldn't be surprising at all if Houston is released before the start of the regular season.
Don Carey is someone Taylor Mays will be competing with for a roster spot. Carey is a good to very good Special Teams player and has held his own as a backup Nickel Back and Safety. Working in Carey's favor is the coaches and front office value him. Unlike Mays, Carey has a proven track record with the team.

Somewhere in a dark basement, probably his mother's, Gene Smith is cackling away saying, "HA! I knew he'd pan out, but you didn't believe me. None of you believed me! Now who's laughing, huh?".
Quote:Mays is fast, a big hitter, and a great special teams player.
I believe he has blocked a couple kicks/punts in his career as well as removed one for a TD when he was in SF.
remember back in the day when we signed that osgood guy?
