One of the reasons I'm a lot more confident this season is the strength in depth we've got now.

There will be genuine competition for places at positions like guard, centre, wide receiver and safety.

But there are still a couple positions where we could be a little light.. Quarterback is obviously one, but what about left tackle ? if Joeckel goes down injured (or simply fails to perform) then who takes his place ?

That's a good question.

I think that spot would go to Sam Young...but I'm not sure.
Jermy Parnell or Josh Wells.
I think Josh Wells would take his spot.
Yep they've talked up Wells a lot this offseason.
Wells

Very true. While there may be "depth", I'm not so sure about quality, from the bottom up. This is the most critical question mark IMO coming into this season.
I also will go with Wells.  If Joekel doesn't  get it together this year then LT becomes our first pick next year. IMHO

Wells is Joeckel's top backup. Austin Pasztor took some practice reps at left tackle in 2013, as he was the emergency fallback if Cam Bradfield was hurt. I believe Sam Young has also seen some reps on the left side, but he's far from a lock to even make the team with at least four tackles (Joeckel, Parnell, Pasztor and Wells) ahead of him on the depth chart.

I still think rookie year injury and bad OL coaching are to blame for most of his struggles, I think he has a big turnaround now.
I would think that if Joeckel is injured, Parnell would go to LT and Pasztor would go to RT.   I think (and hope) Parnell is our best tackle, so he would be the best LT.

...they publicly moved Pasztor to guard for a reason.  His days at RT are history.

I'd have to agree with the assessment that if Joeckel is injured, we won't have too many options. Pasztor is a guard now, and I guess either Parnell or Wells would get the nod to start at LT.

Wells does appear to be the top backup for Joekel which is bad news for Sam Young whose only shot at making the roster would be to beat out Austin Pasztor.

I hope we keep 4 OTs. Parnell Joeckel Wells and Young.

You must not have seen Young play last year.
I think the back up is not on the roster yet.

Cut day is approaching soon.
Sam Baker was cut. He's still recovering from a torn patellar tendon, so it would be a risky signing right now. If he's still available in August the Jags will know a lot more about whether or not Joeckel will pan out.

Sam Baker would be a good vet rotational player for sure. Can never have to many tackles considering the past.
