It is very difficult for people who want to desperately win to validate something, to step back and factually realize where the JAGS started from when Caldwell came on board and gutted the roster. That coupled with the fact that "OMG the Jags are horrible" being regurgitated by the media and said folks who live and die by how their team is perceived by others skews judgement.
OMG it's Peter King, he says we stink, he must be right, I read it on the web. ESPN says.......................................you can stop there.
There is no absolute win or gone figure, that decision is up to Dave, not in our control or the hacks.

Was thinking the same thing, this is just another fire Gus thread. Typical considering the OP.
Quote:Usually (not always) but usually, a coach who is a rah, rah, kind of coach is hiding flaws when it comes to actual knowledge of the game. Pete Carroll could be the exception. But, then again the rost on the Seahwks is loaded and just maybe that's the MAIN reason they win. Sure Bradley is a likable guy, what's not to like? The Big Tuna wasn't warm and fuzzy with anyone least of all his players but he's got two rings and he KNOWS football. So while Gus is widely liked, can he take the Jags to an elite level? That's a good question and hard to answer for us sitting up in the cheap seats cause we don't know what goes on day in and day out with his conduct at practice. I suspect the guys are buying into his enthusiasm, but are they buying into his knowledge of x's and o's?
If they improve very little in the W/L column and especially if Bortles shows little improvement, I think an argument could be made for an exit visa issued to Gus. Time will tell.
I think fans of the game overrate knowledge of the game when it comes to HC. I mean, you can't have someone who doesn't know football in there. But most of these coaches have spent their life playing or teaching football. They KNOW football.
More importantly, it is the leadership and management traits that makes a successful HC. You can't be a good coordinator but a bad HC if you don't know your xs and os (because being bad at x's and o's would make you a bad coordinator also unless you get the gift of Peyton Manning).
You can however, fail as a HC if you don't know how to lead and manage your staff even if you know your x's and o's.
If Gus lasts 20 years as a head coach, when he retires jaguarsmvp will tell us "I told you so!".

The same question can be asked how many different ways I wonder.

Yes. It's not about final win totals. In 2013 Gus started the season off 1-10. In 2014 his team lost the first 8 games.
If gus loses the first 6 games I think he's canned. Especially if they are blow outs after a competitive start.
I could easily see Bradley getting fired, he'd just have to continue to guide the team to the levels of ineptitude he's guided them to so far in his career. The roster is better now, so if he did guide the team to complete ineptness again it would really be obvious what the problem is at that point. I think Bortles will be much improved this season, though, and with better QB play comes better chances for the head coach to hold on to a job.
Quote:I think he gets another year regardless of record. Shad will most likely get rid of the whole regime after 4 straight losing seasons
0-16.... Lets give him another year!
Given the fact that we didn't land Cobb & McCourty in free agency AND Fowler is out for the year, Gus should definitely get a pass this year
Realistic Minimum Goals:
2015 -> 4 Wins
2016 -> 6 Wins
2017 -> 8 Wins
2018 -> Playoffs or bust
I think 5 wins buys Gus another year, but the Jags will win 7.
The team would have to completely collapse due to performance, and not because of unforeseen injuries to critical players. Otherwise, Gus isn't going anywhere.
I find it hard to believe this team can't muster 6 wins this season just based on the improved roster. Anything less than that, go ahead and fire him.
This has been the prove-it year all along (no matter what you believe, it's true) so I expect a big leap.
But just looking at the roster, Gus will be coach again next year.

2018 for playoffs?!! Good lord your expectations are abysmal.
This team has had 3 and 4 wins the past 2 years and the talent this year is better than before. Can't keep giving coaches a pass for not winning.
I agree that the first 2 years are spent making the roster better but now the roster is better. I'm not saying playoffs this year but 6-8 wins should be achievable.
No. It's hard to win when you don't have a QB.

Hahaha! There's another poster here who used to use this tactic a fair amount of time.

Bradley would probably survive four wins this year if they were competitive in the twelve losses, but six wins in 2016 would surely get him fired. I think a lot of heads would roll following the 2015 season if we're not alive for the playoffs in week 17.

Pretty sure the expectation within the building is that Bortles is that QB.

Good thing we have one.
