Chandler Jones

#1

Rumors are coming out of NE that Chandler Jones could possibly be on the trade block. Apparently, they have a lot of guys to sign next season (including Jones) and the Pats are weary on his latest off the field incident.

Would you guys be willing to dangle a 2nd over NE (who does not own a 1st round pick this year) for Chandler Jones.

Would be highly risky as Chandler has one year left on his deal (unless you work out an extension as part of the trade deal) and he has shown some questionable behavior off the field. But, I'm not sure you could find a pass rusher of his quality in the 2nd.

Thoughts?

I'd give them a high third. I'm not trying to do the pats any favors. They can take what they can get from is or figure it out on their own.

Yeah, not a good idea to trade with the Pats.

I wouldn't even consider trading for him until the parameters of a deal were agreed upon. Also I'd wait and see how free agency shakes out to see if we can land someone like Olivier Vernon.

However, if free agency doesn't yield a good starting caliber pass rusher, I'd likely part with a second rounder to acquire Jones. He's not the traditional player New England trades away, which is usually a long in the tooth player who is about to fall off the proverbial cliff . He's a 25 year old DE who is coming off a 12.5 sack Pro Bowl season. Obviously there are off the field concerns, but if through due diligence that appears to be more of a one time deal rather than some lingering issue, I would trade for him.

Sorry, forgot to add that caveat as part of the hypothetical. This would be under the assumption that Dave couldn't find the edge rusher he was looking for in FA.

Under this scenario,  I would trade the Jaguars 2nd Round pick if in Dave Caldwell's position if Caldwell is satisfied with Chandler Jones' character situation.   It's far from a given that a pass rusher the Jags would take in Round 2 would ever get to the level of Jones.

The other question that jumps out is lets say Jones gets a green light in terms of character from Caldwell's perspective but the only way the Jags could get Jones is to make the trade before the 48 hour window agents can talk to teams prior to the start of the FA period.   Would it be worth making the trade under this scenario?    I probably would if in Caldwell's position,  yet I would more than understand why some wouldn't.

There is no reason to trade any of our picks for a player with "questionable off-field behavior."  It also does not make sense to trade for a player with only one year left on his contract.

This. Belichick doesn't offload guys without knowing something you don't know.

The Pats traded up to the 21st pick in the 2012 draft to pick Chandler Jones.  According to Boston.com, he has played in 40 games and started 38; in his career, he has 105 tackles, 23.5 sacks, 6 forced fumbles, and 7 passes defensed.  He had 12.5 sacks this past season, and is only 25 years old.  The Pats picked up his 5th year option for next season, and will make about $7.8m.  The rumored reason for trade speculation is not primarily a character issue, although he was hospitalized recently for a bad reaction to supposed synthetic marijuana.  After the 2016 season, the Pats will have 4 high value free agents, and some speculate that Belichik will not pay the sky high value to the young pass rusher that he will command.  Also, Jabaal Sheard, a first year player, showed he may be a suitable replacement already on the roster.  Rather than get nothing when Jones hits free agency next season, trade him this year and pick up a high pick(s) that Belichick has shown to covet.

If the Jags have the opportunity to use a high 2nd round pick, to acquire a young proven 6'5 260 pass rusher that has now developed better run stopping ability, I would do it in a heartbeat.  As mentioned, it would be great to get him to agree to a long term deal in this scenario.  I would look past the substance issue from an acquisition perspective, but would get his agent to agree to something that financially protects the team from any future substance issue.  Having Fowler and Jones as 3rd down bookends would not be a bad thing.
