6.5 Million Americans chose to pay fine then get Obamacare

The individual healthcare mandate requires every American to buy health insurance or pay a fine. In 2016, 6.5 million Americans chose to pay the fine rather than sign up for insurance on the Obamacare exchanges

Me sarcastic? No couldn't be. I am much too dim witted to grasp the quaint subtleties of such potent mockery!!!

Until my brother got his current job that includes medical insurance (his previous employer didn't offer it) he paid the fine because he couldn't afford the insurance for him and his wife. Even with the subsidy. And with her working full time (the county in which we live is the most expensive county in our state. On top of that we have to pay state income tax. Actually we are taxed on every dang thing you can think of so the paycheck doesn't go as far as it should, but I digress....) He now works for the local community college here in NC and they have good benefits with medical insurance premiums that are reasonable.

My mom has had private insurance for over a decade due to many health issues. When she went on the FL exchange to see about signing up with the ACA it was actually more expensive- even with the subsidies! And she would not have been able to stay with her primary care physician she's been with for the better part of 25 years. If she didn't have so many health issues that required quarterly visits just to make sure everything is in check, nevermind if she has to go to one of the specialists, she and my stepdad would pay the penalties. He goes to the VA if something is wrong, otherwise he pays the penalty for himself.

That's the problem with the whole idea.  If you're going to tell insurance companies they have to take everyone, regardless of pre-existing conditions, then you have to force everyone to buy health insurance.   Otherwise, only sick people buy health insurance, and the system collapses.   The problem is, apparently we were unsuccessful in forcing young healthy people to buy health insurance.

So, we either have to raise the penalty to the point where people won't opt out, or, roll back the whole system to a free market system, which leaves a lot of people who need insurance un-insured, or, tax everyone to pay for everyone to have health insurance.

Now that I think about it, there is one other problem with the whole idea, and that is, Medicaid has become financially unsustainable.   But that's off-topic.

The system is broken.

I don't have a solution.

But, if you force everyone to buy something they may not use in order to make sure that those that need it have it... Well, e already had systems such as those in place, the change being that you were now charging those who could not afford it to begin with too have it... Even if they still couldn't afford it.

I have been uninsured for 14 years. I have had a few times I needed coverage, but couldn't afford it since I am forced to help provide to people that refuse to work to pay for their own. I worked it out with the health care providers and paid them as I could.

Boards of directors of insurance companies are littered with political back scratchers. It's not your government making money off of your requirement to have insurance, it's your government representatives.

Until this country realizes the problem is career politicians the cycle will continue.

Another prime reason that liberalism is a mental disorder.  Anyone who thinks government should force people into any financial decisions don't belong in America. There are no debtor's prisons here, at least there weren't until 9 years ago.....
What lies behind us, and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.
