Marcedes Lewis - Decision Day ($3.7m)

#1
(This post was last modified: 02-20-2018, 11:01 AM by HURRICANE!!!.)

Need to cut him by 4pm Tuesday (2/20/2018) to save the $3.7m he's due next season

Perhaps cut him and then renegotiate another year at a much lower price.

Great guy but need to be financially responsible.

This will be a tough one. He had a really good year last year but this would be more emotional and a respect thing than because he's a top level talent.

I'm intrigued to see how ruthless we will be trying to build a team to win.

Good bye Marcedes.

I hope we can keep him. I think he contributes a lot. Especially as a blocking TE.

Explain this to me if I'm overlooking something, but I don't think we have to cut him by this date. I'm thinking this date is merely the earliest he can be cut.

1010xl reported that the decision must be made by today @ 4pm.  I wouldn't think there would be an "earliest" date and time since I can only assume a team can pick up the option as early as they want.

If there is info to contradict the original post, please let me know.  I'm just going off of the best sources of Global Sports Information, Hicken & Prosser.

I hope they are negotiating to keep him for two more years a little bit cheaper.
Vet minimum is about $1.01 million for him. Maybe something like 2.5 mil per year for 2 more years will keep him?
Not sure what market his agent may have found for him.

The 3.7 mil figure doesn't really seem that high to me given his redzone work and the blocking prowess he displayed in 2017.

Option has been picked up.

Deserves it to be honest. He was handling edge rushers last year and had some big TDs. Doesn't look like age is a big issue yet.

They are keeping him around for 2018, at least for now.

The cut-off date is indeed today to decide on the option. In my response above I thought they were just talking about cutting him for a cap savings which wouldn't have a cut-off date, but I didn't know about the option.

I expect them to draft a TE.

Good move we don't have anyone to replace him so cutting him doesn't make sense

Not intending to turn this into a TC vs Caldwell debate, but I am wondering how much TCs presence in the FO influences the decision to keep Marcedes Lewis. TC has often preferred a veteran presence on his team and has not shied away from older vets on occasion.

On the other hand, perhaps keeping Lewis serves as insurance in case they don't get the TE they want in the draft or FA.

In any event, on some level, it's good as a fan to hear a guy say he wants to play his entire career with a team and get the chance to do so after 13 or so seasons, especially after all the losing. Even though Poz started out as a Bill, he kinda falls into that category too.

Glad he'll be back. He is one of the most underrated players on the team.

I think Marcedes' play in 2017 made it a no brainer regardless of whom you speculate made more of the decision.

They were able to capitalize on his mismatch ability in the red-zone multiple times rather easily and his blocking on both phases of offense was largely outstanding.

Glad to see Marcedes back. The guy belongs in a Jags Jersey and still brings it, especially in the blocking game and the red zone. He has quietly become one of my favorites over the years.

Yes, it's improvement, but it's Blaine Gabbert 2012 level improvement. - Pirkster
