Compensation picks

How come the colts got one for Moncrief but the jags didn’t get one for Robinson or hurns leaving. How do you decided who gets the picks and who doesn’t?

Nobody knows the exact formula for how the comp picks are determined, but they are suppose to look at what you lost/gained in FA.

They must feel the Colts lost more in Moncrief than they got back in FA. We lost Robinson, but gained Moncrief and they basically nulled each other stat wise. On paper, we didn't really lose or gain anything, even though we all know Robinson is a much better receiver than Moncrief is.

Hurns didn't do much at all for Dallas. He had like 20 catches for 300 yards.

We lost Aaron Colvin, but gained DJ Hayden and Hayden had a much better season than Colvin did.

Nothing is official yet. People are just speculating. No official picks will be announced until like early March.

We signed more free agents - and expensive ones like Norwell, Moncrief, Hayden, ASJ, than we lost (Hurns and Colvin).

We get nothing, the Colts get an extra 4th rounder because of our bad signing of Moncrief.

Good teams manage compensatory picks, bad teams like the Jags get nothing.  Hopefully because we're tight against the cap we'll get a few picks for Lambo, Yelden, Cann, etc. when they leave in free agency.  But none of them will be high picks, maybe a few 6th or 7th rounders.

Hurns was cut so he doesn't count towards any comp picks.

We're just playin' by the rules.  You can't just have a newcomer come in and steal the show.

Keep in mind that in order to get a pick, you have to have lost more UFAs than you signed. If there's a difference with more UFAs lost than gained, that's typically how many picks you get. It's only at that point they then look at the biggest name lost free agent(s) to determine their value.

Street free agenct don't count and I'm thinking minimum wage UFAs don't count either.

We spent a poop-ton of money on Norwell, that's how.
