Trading Telvin

(This post was last modified: 01-09-2019, 05:46 PM by HURRICANE!!!.)

Please watch this again.  If we get rid of Telvin, then #44 and #48 will be our top 2 LBs going into next season.  Based on this play, perhaps we should trade all 3 LBs and do what Gus Bradley (Chargers) did vs the Ravens and just play 7 DBs

This thread is confusing. Summary

*Telvin had a bad year (but had 134 tackles, 100 of which were unassisted).
*LBs are easy to obtain but we've only been able to find Mike Pete, Daryl Smith and Poz over the past decade (prior to Telvin's arrival). Most of our other LBs this century have pretty much sucked.
*Other teams will pay $10/m+ over each of the next 3 years even though LBs are easy to find and we think he's overpriced.

Why does everyone think he had such a down year last season?  Personally, I think he had to carry a lot of the LB load as we are still in search of a decent 3rd LB that is viable in the starting role.

Telvin plays weakside
You are correct. My slip up. Then he definitely needs help!

Just totally scrap the bolded parts (because they aren't factual) and it makes some sense.

It also helps to not over-weigh the importance of a high number of tackles.
Finding a team willing to pay Telvin his contract number would also be a challenge. Maybe do-able, but certainly there would be a small number of potential suitors.

Again  - I'd ride with our LB situation this offseason because there's just too much to fix on the other side of the ball.

It never ceases to amaze me how some people want to trade away or cut some of our best players... just for the sake of change and/or for draft picks.  Take a look at the big picture and the circumstances this past season.  The defense was on the field way too long in many games and were playing from behind more often than not.

I don't think it was Jags02's intentions. I just think it was just him playing Devil's Advocate during the dead zone. Everybody does seem to want to ship off the usual suspects and for good reason. But it's hard to net much return value on [BLEEP] hats like that. I like Telvin. I don't want to see him go personally. It was a hypothetical question.

I think he has at least a value of an early 2nd RD pick. The outside linebacker position is valued differently based upon the scheme in which a defense operates. Guys like Smith tend to get shoved a back little bit further on the shelf for guys like Von Miller and Khalil Mack who effect the passing game a lot more frequently by playing close to the L.O.S with a hand or two in the dirt.

I think Telvin would actually make for an intriguing ILB in a 3 - 4 scheme. He's very instinctive. Plays sideline to sideline as good as anybody out there. And I agree with you 110%. For what it's worth. The defense DID NOT cost us too many games in 2018. They still managed to get it done in spite of being faced with a historically piss poor offense. It's a lot to ask one unit to carry an entire football team.

Ask the Bears how they feel right now about Mack. Was he worth it? I don't know now. Same can be said for the Ravens and how well their defense played in 2018. If your offense can't outscore it's kicker at home though what good is having Mack out there? So... I don't know.

Instead of trading a player everyone thinks we don't want like Fournette, Bortles, Jackson or Gipson, how about trading a player everyone thinks we do want in Telvin Smith. Now, I don't mean that I don't want him... I do... but we can get some legit picks for Telvin, and LBs are often the easiest to replace on defense. He's carrying a $10 mil base salary in each of the next three seasons. That's money the Jaguars can use, but that teams looking to trade for him would see as a bargain for a player with his talent.

What do you think we could get for Telvin, and how might you go about replacing him?

Or, should I just put down the bong and get back to bed.

Two things.

First. I think Telvin would be worth no less than a 2nd RD pick.

Secondly. Put away the bong. But invest in edibles. It'll go a long way my friend for what you're dealing with. I know it's off topic. But I am proud of you. Keep up the good work!

No way. A 4th is the best we can get imo, that's why I wouldn't trade him.

Who was the last LB (and please don't say Mack) that was traded for a 2nd or more?

One thing i don't think people consider, other than stats, is where that player fits in terms of the franchise.

You can't underestimate the influence he has in the looker room and on the team. He's a leader, a captain. I get looking from a what if angle but we can't just judge players on stats.

I wouldn't trade him neither. I like his fit here. I like his connection with Ramsey and the rest of the defense. He's a good kid. He's prideful. I actually cited points a few moments ago regarding the difference between pass rushing OLB's like Mack and Miller and then guys like Smith and so forth that traditionally roam around the parameters and don't tend to get an opportunity to play with a hand or two in the dirt.

Good player. He was a steal as a 4th or 5th RD pick. I think he got knocked a little bit because he smoked a little reefer? (big [BLEEP] deal). Since he's been here though he's been nothing but professional and a leader in the locker room. He's honestly one of my favorite linebackers we've ever had already. I would put him right up there with Daryl Smith.

Just last year, Ramsey, Smith, Bouye, and Campbell were all-pros. And many here, at one point this season, were talking about trading or even cutting them.

It was a bad year; these are not bad players. We keep them and hope a new QB helps put us back on track.

We need Poz on the sideline and maybe a true MLB.

This is the lingering effect of the Ketchmanism "Picks not players," which I always thought was dopey.

You accumulate picks to get players who produce.

Telvin Smith has produced at a Pro Bowl level.

Telvin Smith is still in his prime and under contract.

You got that production out of a 5th round pick.

Worst to 1st.  Curse Reversed!
