1010 Interview with Rich Tylski

#1

Yesterday afternoon 1010XL conducted an interview with former Jaguar Rich Tylski.

Many of you have been very outspoken with regard to Tyreek Hill, given the child abuse accusations that have been brought against him.  With that in mind, I'd like your opinion of 1010XL promoting Rich Tylski, despite the fact that he and his wife were previously convicted of child abuse related to their former adopted daughter and were ordered to pay $1.25 million

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rich_Tylski

In May 2008, Tylski was placed in a pretrial intervention program after he admitted in court to abusing his adopted daughter. His wife Jane pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated child abuse and was given two years probation.

On February 24, 2010, Tylski and his wife were ordered by a judge to pay 1.25 million dollars to their former adopted daughter.

I don't understand. How are they "promoting" him? And, if someone did something bad 10 years ago, should that person be shunned by society for the rest of his life?

1010xl is marking the 25th year of Jags football by doing an extended series of chats with former Jaguar players.
Players they've had on for this series thus far are:

MJD, Jimmy Smith, Willie Jackson, Donovin Darius, Natrone Means, Aaron Beasley and now Tylski.
recaps available here:  https://www.1010xl.com/category/daily-jaguars-blog/

Hard to see that as "promoting" Tylski.  Unwise choice to have on?  Sure.  Probably just the only former player they could get in this week to chat.

Here's an article from '06 about the abuse for those who don't recall:

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Former NFL offensive guard Rich Tylski and his wife were accused of hitting their adopted daughter with a belt, slamming her head on a table and other abuse that left the girl with broken bones in her hands and leg.

The recording is in the XL Primetime link below (1 hour and 29 minute mark).  With the hosts of the show talking about how tough he was and what a great guy is just didn't seem appropriate given his history.  I do agree that everybody has their right to their own opinion and in most cases, people do deserve a 2nd chance, so I just wanted to throw this out there to get your thoughts.

Many on this board were calling Tyreek Hill a [BLEEP] and a scumbag (see link below) so, as I noted above, I just wanted peoples opinion.

NYC4jags thanks for the link.

flsprtsgod, From what I recall and from the article it sounds like his wife was the real abuser.  That doesn't excuse him from not stopping it or possibly covering it up though.  Regardless of what people think about discipline/punishment to children, "hitting with a belt" doesn't necessarily mean child abuse.  I was spanked with a belt by my father when I was a youngster and I had spanked my children when they were small (though not with a belt).  By all means I'm not saying that the guy was not a piece of [BLEEP], I'm just saying that it appears to me that his wife was the abuser.  It appears that he didn't stop it and/or didn't report it.

This child wasn't spanked, she was beaten, and he was every bit as guilty of the physicality as the woman.

If they were convicted of abusing their own “real” children, would they have been made to pay them money too I wonder, or would those kids just be out of luck?

I was spanked with a belt and swatted with switches that I had to get. No broken bones. Certainly not condoning it. Think I could get a half mil. Sure would make me feel better.

I don't feel I was abused.

"Doctors found extensive bruising in various stages of healing. A skeletal survey found six or seven healing fractures in the child's hand, the police report stated."

The kid was abused by both. Tylski not reporting what his wife was doing makes him just as guilty and a guy who let his wife so those things to a child wasn't using a belt just to spank her. He was beating her too.

I got hit with a belt and switch as a kid but this is over the top on child abuse. The mother should be hanged in public for what she did to her.

Why Tylski? You have five Jaguars greats, and then Tylski? Tylski was AJ Cann back in the day. He was the guy that kept starting even though we all knew he really wasn't that good.

The abuse was ugly, but Rich wasn't the primary abuser.  He spanked the daughter with a leather belt.  That was deemed excessive.  But, his wife sounds like she probably shouldn't ever be around children.  She ended up with a felony conviction after admitting to bending her fingers back so far that she broke bones, and left the poor girl with a deformed ring finger as a result.  She also shoved her down a flight of stairs, breaking her leg.

I'm not sure if they're still married.  What he did was bad enough, but based on the wife's violence toward the child, there were clearly psychological issues there. It sounds like the girl was adopted by another family, and was making the adjusments to a more traditional family life, which I hope that continued.

My guess is that he was raised in an environment similar to what he reflected for his daughter.  Hopefully, that pretrial intervention helped him work through his issues, and taught him a few things.  In court, he referred to it similar to the death of a child when she was removed from the house.  I'm wondering if his wife was thinking the same thing?

I'm not sure about being hanged, but she should have gotten a harsher punishment for what she put the girl through than 2 years supervised parole.  She's got a felony on her record, but a little prison time would have done her some good.

Because people make excuses for abusers as evidenced herein.
