The "base" is about 35% of the Country on each side. It's the other 30% who really matter in these things.

I think it was that way 20-30 years ago. Now it's 45-45-10. It's enough that national campaigns focus on turning out the base more than trying to appeal to the middle. There's no incentive for a media outlet to play to the 10% either.
