How do we help Minshew?

And yes he was quite raw and i realize he played less games and probably had better teammates, but the quality he was playing against was less also.

All I can find is that his head coach was Scottie Montgomery (a former WR and WR coach) and the teams record was pretty bad.

Whatever system he played there, I don’t think we want to repeat it!

Seems he had no running game to rely on, no defense and was never given control of his offense, but they played a version of air raid.

Josh Allen and Tua rated above Minshew?

Yeah, La Canfora has to fill this dead time with something. Even if it is pulled out of his [BLEEP].

All of the CBS guys like to pick on the easy small market target Jags, especially because Prisco is a bit of a Jags homer. Prisco is the senior guy, kind of like their daddy, so they work hard for their independence. La Canfora's animus for the Jags leads me to believe Walterfootball is his alter ego.

Can we find a proper kick and punt returner? Walker felt like a fumble waiting to happen.

They drafted a return specialist late and signed 2 more undrafted rookie return guys.

Oh awesome! Thanks NYC, looking forward to how they do. Corey was a real weapon back there in the past.

Teach Minshew, all TEs, WRs, and RBs to fake cough/sneeze convincingly.

Have them do that in between plays, particularly in the huddle, and integrate coughing as part of audibles at the line.

Thanks for this.

I thought maybe we could tie in why Minshew took such a big leap, but it looks like it was because his original team was just awful haha.

More play action needed.
Pray Gruden is hip to this.

Yeah, and I have seen it being mentioned multiple times before that Gardner could do well if he did play action more. But for whatever reasons, Deflippo didn't really utlize that last year. Here's hoping that Gruden does this with him a lot more. I think he might. I believe that Gruden will try and help Gardner.

I was glad to hear Tyler Eifert say that him, Gardner and other players are already learning the new offense together as a group. Here's hoping they will gel and Gruden will help put them all in a position to succeed.

Flip didn’t utilize it more because he is not a good OC. He lost his job in Minnesota for a reason and he isn’t currently an OC for a reason.

Flip did Gardner no favors. The offense lacked a lot of basic concepts and was super predictable. I sat on my couch and called several plays based of formation. Gruden is going to be possibly the biggest offseason addition

I think he could be too. I do believe he will try and help Gardner and hopefully do a lot of good things with him.

Also here are some comments Doug made about Gardner possibly operating more in the pocket:

He was brought in more or less for Foles.  That's who the playbook was designed for, so they were more than likely only running part of it for a rookie who 1) nobody thought would be starting and/or 2) nobody thought would make the team.  You can't completely revamp your playbook after the season has started.

So what does that involve?

I’ve been watching a few Washington State games (as there is nothing else to watch!) and the obvious thing there was the number of short passes he threw and the number of passing options he was given (including a McCaffrey-style pass-catching RB). And although he wasn’t always up against the best opposition, he was ridiculously effective in that offense. I’m wondering if Gruden might try something similar.

Chris Thompson will help Minshew. And then of course my favorite draft pick Shenault. We still have Chark. And IF Eifert is healthy, I think he and Oliver can be very helpful.

I just hope our defense is better.

I disagree that Minshew needs to “play from the pocket more” That’s usually what confuses young guys the most.. you drop back on this little box where you can get smoked at any moment.. and you have to see everything from there. I think Minshew would benefit much more from designed roll outs and sprint outs.. combining those concepts with play action. Obviously he needs to improve his pocket presence.. but we need to utilize his mobility and keep his confidence high.. making him play strictly from the pocket with our [BLEEP] O-Line won’t do either.

Doesn’t the west coast offense Gruden runs feature lots of designed roll outs?

That is part of the west coast. Moving the pocket.

A couple of things here:

1. Regardless of how often they actually call plays designed for Minshew to pass from the pocket, to think he doesn't need to improve that aspect of his game is silly. Otherwise opponents with better defenses will employ the same defensive strategy the saints did last year vs Minshew and his production will take a negative hit when unable to improvise freely.  You ALWAYS develop young QBs ability to operate from the pocket.  Personally I think he will do better there w/ better protection, which brings up to the second point.

2. You say he needs to improve his pocket presence.  His pocket presence is outstanding. It's very, very good and is one of his greatest assets.  What he needs to improve from the pocket is the speed with which he processes his reads and releases the ball. Again, this will be aided by protection but we did see him hold the ball too long at times - enough to recognize room for improvement. In this regard, one should not diminish the impact his stature impedes him from viewing crowded throwing lanes. I expect (hope) that this will be a consideration for Gruden as he designs a playbook for Minshew as opposed to one designed for a 6'5" QB like we saw last season.
