One thing that pops put as I've studied both the American and Russian revolutions is even though everyone knew *something* was coming, few ordinary individuals had a clear idea of what kind of person might eventually come knocking on their door and why.  It's the nature of the chaos.  What do you do if the red army comes knocking? What do you do if the white army comes knocking?  These are things we shouldn't want to live through even if we think we can predict how they will go.
