Ban the Tush Push?

Someone like kyler Murray would be a beast at the tush throw, get one of your lineman to pick your qb up, with ball in hand and fling him over the defensive line

Game changer

Sounds like a potential new Olympic event. Sort of like...can I say this?....midget throwing, aka dwarf tossing, back in the day. Really...it was a real thing back in the 80's. And BTW, this is not a commentary on the stature of Kyler.

I think they need to ban any type of forward push from offensive players. This isn't rugby.

I'm fine with it so long as there is no jersey grab. At that point, call it as a hold.

We see it a bunch on a tough run, two or three defenders slowing progress, not making a tackle, and here comes a guard like a wrecking ball and blasts the pile forward another yard or two before the player hits the dirt. How is that bad?

The D is equally capable of stacking guys and pushing each other for a momentum advantage.

To ban this, you may as well ban qb sneak. Most of the time there isn’t even real pushing. Hurts is a freak, and he is the reason this play works.

I think that group “tug of war” is a unique sports play and fun to watch. It doesn’t happen that often really either.

I don’t have a problem with it.  You don’t ban it because one team is good at it…which exactly what is happening (should they do it).

Because when defenders push the runner back, it's called forward progress and the ball is marked down where the runner started to get pushed back.  When the offensive lineman pushes the runner forward, the runner gets the benefit of the extra yards and is not marked down where the offensive lineman started the push.  They should just blow the ball down where the offensive player makes the push then I'm ok with them pushing all they want if it makes them happy.

Yes, flag football is so very exciting.

When defenders push the runner back, they give the runner the opportunity to disengage or regain forward progress. If progress is halted, they whistle the scrimmage dead.

Until that forward progress is halted, the play remains alive. So are you suggesting that if a defender engages ball carrier, no other defender can assist with hampering forward progress too? If an RB is still chugging against one or more defenders, I see no reason why a guard cannot jump in to push the pile forward. The defense can make the choice to either swarm the defender (hopefully to stop forward progress) or to engage the lineman to avoid crashing the pile.

I don't want to fully convert to basketball on grass.

The fact is that in order for them to do the tush push, they are on 1st and goal a few inches [or 1-2 yards] out from the goal

Your defence has already allowed them to get into that situation , the blame gets put back on the defence

They allow the offense to push the ball carrier forward AND give the ball carrier the benefit of those yards. Why would they not give the defense the same opportunity? Mark the ball where they runner is pushed back to? As it is now the rules are a one way street in favor of the offense. (imagine that)

This. If youre going to allow the play to continue, then mark it wherever it finishes.
