BALTIMORE (AP) — The cargo ship that lost power and crashed into a bridge in Baltimore underwent "routine engine maintenance" in port beforehand, the U.S. Coast Guard said Wednesday, as divers recovered the bodies of two of six workers who plunged into the water when it collapsed. The others were presumed dead, and officials said search efforts had been exhausted.

I really feel for the families of those workers. They died, working a routine shift, in a most terrifying way. Theirs wasn’t a sudden and instant death.

I imagine that info would be withheld pending the investigation and cause/negligence are determined.

Wouldn't you want to know the names of the local Maryland Harbor Pilots that were actually in control of the ship?

I’m curious, does anyone else on this board live in Baltimore City?

Par for the course in this country. Nothing works correctly. Everything passes safety inspections anyways. We all take a chance being on something or around something. We're overdue. Hate to sound so doom and gloom. We all know what's probably coming next. Probably a plane failing midflight and not being able to make an emergency landing would be my guess.

Yes, and the harbor pilot should have been in command of the vessel, which suggests negligence on his/her part.  However, evidence not yet determined or made public could possibly prove otherwise.  This investigation involves multiple legal jurisdictions.  If criminal negligence is believed to have occurred, authorities may not release much info until the exact charges are filed.

It's a shame that it often takes a disaster like this to bring the communities together. Feel good stories like this give me hope. I just wish we had it under better circumstances and more commonplace.

The amount of people working on ships with zero ability to swim is astounding

That's a good point. You would think that would be a mandatory requirement to a job like that.

NTSB releases images, video of investigators onboard stricken cargo ship
NTSB chair says investigation into Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse is a ‘massive undertaking’

The National Transportation Safety Board has released images and video of its investigators onboard the stricken Dali cargo ship that remains stuck Thursday underneath the remains of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore.

Photos show NTSB investigators in hard hats launching drones and looking over materials on the bridge of the ship.

You'll need to scroll down a tad, the video will be on the right side of your screen

Video: Cargo ship that caused Baltimore bridge collapse crashed at Antwerp port in 2016

The Singaporean-flagged cargo ship, the Dali, that caused the Francis Scott Key Bridge to collapse this week was involved in another crash less than a decade ago.

Video obtained by Reuters shows the Dali scraping against a quay in Antwerp, Belgium in 2016. The vessel was built a year earlier.

[BLEEP] is getting weird. I am sure it's just a coincidence though.

What bothers me, is that, I work in transportation. For a Railroad company. We have an operations call every morning and the FIRST group or topic that comes up is safety.

We preach safety religiously. We reference accidents, current events, derailments, situational awareness being slacked on, etc.

What are these maritimers doing? Or, what are these companies doing that are responsible for ships, small barge's, etc? You would think after what happened earlier this week in Baltimore that they would all be on high alert, would excercise a heightened sense of awareness and caution around bridges, but, nope.

Awful. Interesting the ship went straight for a supporting column.

I don’t think it was intentional. The article states the lights on the ship were flickering and in the video they can be seen to come on not long before impact. Plus, the heavy smoke coming from the stack indicates to me the pilot was attempting to reverse the prop(s) or use them for steerage since the ship didn’t appear to be moving fast enough for effective rudder control. I wouldn’t be surprised if they dropped anchor in an attempt to stop.

It looks like a bad series of events at the absolute worst time.

Another National Anthem protest. This time, a bridge kneels.
